Fearing post-pregnancy breast sagging may diminish feminine appeal, some women seek breast implants to maintain their beauty and present a positive image to their children. But is breast implant surgery permissible during pregnancy? Generally, breast augmentation does not affect lactation or fertility, provided it does not damage mammary gland tissue.
Currently, the most common procedures are implant-based breast augmentation and autologous fat transfer augmentation. Autologous fat transfer involves extracting fat from your own body for injection, eliminating rejection risks and posing no threat to pregnancy. For implant-based augmentation, the outcome depends on the placement location of the implants.Implants can be placed in two locations within the breast: beneath the pectoral muscle or in the retro-mammary space. Regardless of placement, the implant remains below the mammary gland, ensuring it does not affect the glandular tissue or fertility.
Additionally, some women worry that implants might affect breastfeeding. After pregnancy and childbirth, milk production is regulated by prolactin, which is controlled by the central nervous system and endocrine system—not by the implants. Furthermore, milk flow does not pass through the implants, so breastfeeding remains unaffected.
