Prevention magazine recently published an article suggesting that for minor issues like dandruff or insect bites, besides seeing a doctor, you can also use common household items as "remedies" for quick relief.
Antacid tablets can soothe insect bites. Their primary function is to suppress stomach acid and relieve heartburn. However, Dr. Howard Sobel, a dermatologic surgeon at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, notes that antacid tablets often contain aspirin, making them effective for soothing mosquito bites. He recommends crushing one tablet, mixing it with a small amount of oatmeal (which also provides relief) and water to form a paste. Apply this paste to the affected area for immediate pain and itch relief.
Mouthwash for athlete's foot. Dr. Sobel explains that both alcohol-based and alcohol-free mouthwashes possess antibacterial properties, making them effective for treating athlete's foot symptoms. After bathing, simply apply mouthwash to a cotton ball and wipe the soles, toes, and spaces between toes.
Baking soda removes dental plaque. Brushing with baking soda clears plaque and whitens teeth. Dr. Linda Franks, a dermatology professor at New York University, notes that baking soda also neutralizes skin pH, providing local relief for discomfort like itching caused by sunburn, eczema, or heat rash. Dissolve baking soda in water and soak the affected area for 30 minutes.
Nasal spray stops nosebleeds. Beyond relieving congestion, nasal spray can also stop nosebleeds. Amy Sutton-Pick, Ph.D., a pharmacist at Butler University, recommends tilting your head forward to clear blood clots from the nose during a nosebleed. Then spray nasal spray into the nostrils, pinch the nose shut, and apply pressure for 10 minutes. If bleeding persists, repeat the pressure for another 10 minutes. If bleeding persists, seek immediate medical attention.
Aloe Vera Gel for Canker Sores. Dr. Irwin Smigel, President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, explains that aloe vera gel contains multiple vitamins and amino acids that repair damaged tissue and reduce inflammation and pain. Using aloe vera gel to treat canker sores can accelerate healing by 50%.
Tea tree oil for dandruff. With antibacterial properties, tea tree oil is commonly used to treat skin infections like localized ulcers and athlete's foot. A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that shampoo containing 5% tea tree oil reduced dandruff by 41% while improving scalp itchiness and oiliness.Dr. Sobel recommends that adding a small amount of tea tree oil to your shampoo at home is equally effective. Dark chocolate protects against UV rays. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that regularly eating dark chocolate helps shield skin from UV damage. The antioxidant flavanol in dark chocolate prevents premature wrinkles and lowers the risk of skin cancer caused by sun exposure.
