Currently, rhinoplasty is the most popular cosmetic surgery across Asian countries, with techniques varying by region—hence the terms "Korean-style rhinoplasty" and "Japanese-style rhinoplasty." So, what distinguishes Korean-style from Japanese-style rhinoplasty?
1.Japanese Rhinoplasty
To address the shortcomings of traditional rhinoplasty, Japanese rhinoplasty uses L-shaped silicone implants to elevate the nasal bridge. Autologous ear cartilage is grafted onto the nasal tip to protect the skin, prevent silicone extrusion, and subtly enhance tip projection and definition. The procedure requires only local anesthesia, takes approximately 30-50 minutes, and hides incisions within the nostrils. However, it cannot achieve lengthening for upturned noses or precise sculpting of the nasal tip.
2. Korean Rhinoplasty (Composite Rhinoplasty)
Korean rhinoplasty techniques were adapted from Western methods by Korean surgeons. Koreans have effectively marketed this Western-suited procedure as "Korean rhinoplasty."
Korean surgeons propose using autologous cartilage at the nasal tip to reduce the risk of rupture under skin pressure. This technique combines implants (silicone or Gore-Tex) with autologous cartilage, hence the name "composite rhinoplasty."
Beyond the composite concept, advanced Korean rhinoplasty often involves separating and correcting the septal cartilage and alar cartilage. Excess tissue is removed, while deficient areas are augmented. Using autologous or allograft cartilage, surgeons adjust the nasal tip angle, increase nasal length, or even reduce the tip size. If necessary, alar and nostril adjustments are added, making the procedure more complex and precise.
Although Korean-style rhinoplasty requires a longer recovery period, its ability to comprehensively enhance the nose has gradually established it as the mainstream approach in nasal reshaping.
Overall, Korean-style rhinoplasty comprehensively addresses the patient's entire facial profile—from the bridge to the tip and alae—ensuring holistic aesthetic harmony. This integrated approach represents the future of rhinoplasty. However, the optimal solution remains consulting an experienced plastic surgeon at a reputable hospital to select the most suitable technique based on individual needs.
