What is a "bitter melon face"?
This facial appearance often stems from poorly shaped eyebrows. The shape and direction of eyebrows significantly influence the overall impression of facial features. If they slope downward excessively, it creates a melancholic, sorrowful look. In traditional Chinese physiognomy, this facial type is considered unlucky and tends to be disliked by elders.Consider how this facial trait is described in Dream of the Red Chamber, one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, through its iconic character Lin Daiyu: "Her brows, like wisps of smoke, seemed furrowed yet not; her eyes, like dew-laden leaves, appeared tearful yet not. Her demeanor bore the sorrow of dimples, her beauty the frailty of illness."Daiyu possessed precisely this downward-sloping brow shape. Consequently, when Grandma Jia selected a daughter-in-law, she rejected Daiyu in favor of Baochai. The primary reason was Baochai's appearance: "Her face was like a silver plate, her eyes like water-apricots. Her brows were naturally green without makeup, her lips naturally red without rouge"—a complexion that appeared healthier and more radiant than Daiyu's. Had Daiyu lived in modern times, she might have considered brow reshaping surgery to win the favor of elders.
What are downward-sloping eyebrows?
Also known as "beard-like brows," this shape slopes outward and downward, with a high inner arch and low outer arch, creating a sorrowful expression. While the downward tilt conveys gentleness, excessive drooping can make one appear perpetually gloomy.
What is Korean-style brow lift surgery?
Brow lift surgery corrects drooping eyebrows and typically involves two surgical approaches:
1. Periosteal fixation method:This technique involves making a 2–3 cm incision at the middle-outer third of the eyebrow. A crescent-shaped skin segment no wider than 1 cm is excised above the incision. The eyebrow skin is then elevated upward with sutures and fixed at the optimal height. This technique involves making an incision along the crease line of the double eyelid or dissecting upward toward the frontalis muscle during double eyelid surgery. Dissection should not extend too high (generally no more than 2 cm above the eyebrow margin) to avoid damaging the supraorbital nerve. The eyebrow muscle is then suspended onto the frontal periosteum with sutures. After adjusting the eyebrow height to the optimal position, the sutures are knotted for fixation. Finally, the eyelid skin incision is sutured. The goal of brow lift surgery is to elevate drooping brow tails. This is achieved by excising appropriate skin and subcutaneous tissue at the junction of the lower and upper brow margins, thereby adjusting the height and shape of the eyebrows.
Postoperative Care Instructions:
1. Maintain cleanliness of the surgical site to prevent incision infection.
2. Sutures will be removed 7-8 days postoperatively.
3. Avoid seafood, chili peppers, alcohol, and other irritating foods for one week post-surgery.
4. Keep the surgical site dry for one week. Avoid pressure on the area for one month; massage is strictly prohibited.
5. Take medications as prescribed and attend follow-up appointments on schedule.
Post-operative Effects of Brow Lift:
1. Lifts the outer eyebrow corners to create a high, arched willow-leaf eyebrow shape.
2. Tightens the outer eye area, smoothing skin and eliminating wrinkles.
3. The altered eye contour enhances facial proportions, creating a beautiful oval face shape.
4. Achieves wrinkle reduction through localized skin tightening.
