I. Risks of Post-Term Pregnancy for Mother and Fetus
① For the mother, post-term pregnancy poses significant risks, with the most direct being an increased likelihood of miscarriage. It also heightens the probability of difficult labor and cesarean section.
② Furthermore, the impact on the fetus is even greater. Post-term pregnancies increase the risk of stillbirth and preterm delivery. The fetus is also more susceptible to related medical conditions, compromising the infant's health after birth.
II. Proper Management of Post-Term Pregnancy
A pregnancy exceeding 42 weeks is classified as post-term. Given the risks outlined above, induction is typically recommended around 41 weeks. Below are actions expectant mothers can take to manage post-term pregnancy:
In the late stages of pregnancy, if everything is progressing normally, expectant mothers should begin activities that facilitate labor. Gentle exercise at home can help induce labor. This does not refer to strenuous exercise; the key is to avoid overly intense activities. Examples include daily walks, climbing stairs, etc. Additionally, techniques like "pressing the soles of the feet together" or "sitting cross-legged" can aid natural childbirth.
Should a post-term pregnancy occur, actively cooperate with medical examinations and treatments. Proper care and regular check-ups are crucial.
Breast Massage During Pregnancy May Prevent Post-Term Pregnancy
Moderate breast stimulation during pregnancy can reduce the risk of post-term pregnancy and facilitate smoother delivery. Breast stimulation also shortens labor duration, with the effect correlating to the duration of nipple stimulation.Clinical observations indicate that expectant mothers who stimulate their nipples for more than 3 hours daily experience an average interval of 4.6 days from the start of stimulation to delivery. In contrast, those stimulating for less than 3 hours daily have an average interval of 8.5 days.
While breast massage during pregnancy can help prevent post-term pregnancy, it is essential to maintain moderation to avoid harm from excessive stimulation.
Excessive rubbing or squeezing can cause internal breast damage. Overstimulating the breasts and nipples during pregnancy can cause engorgement and excitement, potentially triggering uterine contractions. Pinching or squeezing the breasts and nipples may intensify these contractions. While breast massage during pregnancy can help prevent post-term pregnancy, expectant mothers should learn to massage appropriately while maintaining moderation.
