Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder"
Do you spend over an hour every morning staring at the mirror, trying on multiple outfits before finally feeling satisfied enough to leave the house? Today, beauty, plastic surgery, and fashion have become deeply ingrained in people's minds. Under this mounting pressure, women's pursuit of beauty has gradually shifted, leading to what's known as "beauty OCD."
When beauty becomes a fierce competitive edge and cosmetic surgery a fashion statement, a new term emerges: "beauty obsession." Ms. Song, who works in the beauty industry, embodies this phenomenon. Highly conscious of her appearance, she describes herself as suffering from "beauty obsession."
At 26, Ms. Song works as a white-collar professional managing marketing for a chain of beauty salons. Due to her job, she places great importance on her appearance. Daily meticulous makeup and regular skincare routines are non-negotiable. Since last year, she has also joined the trend of cosmetic surgery. According to Ms. Song, she underwent rhinoplasty at Wenzhou Oriental Plastic Surgery last year and was very satisfied with the results. However, this year she became dissatisfied with her figure, feeling that excess fat on her thighs and arms detracted from her appearance. "Every time I look in the mirror, I see the fat on my thighs and arms. I've tried countless weight-loss methods with no results. I weigh myself daily, and if I gain even one kilogram, I feel completely distracted all day. I truly believe I have beauty obsession syndrome," Ms. Song stated.
Cases like Ms. Song's are actually quite common. According to Director Zhao Fengcha of the hospital, nearly every young woman seeking cosmetic procedures exhibits varying degrees of "beauty obsession," with the National Day holiday serving as a major trigger for its outbreak. Reports indicate that since the hospital announced in mid-September that "a team of Chinese and Korean plastic surgery experts will conduct consultations at Dongfang Hospital during the National Day holiday," their consultation and appointment hotlines have been overwhelmed."We receive over 50 calls daily for National Day expert consultations, with particularly high demand for appointments with World Liposuction Champion Wang Zhijun, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital's facial plastic surgery authority Wei Min, and Korean maxillofacial master Park Won-jin. Moreover, many young women inquire about multiple procedures," Director Zhao explained.
According to professionals, "beauty obsession" is a figurative expression for an intense pursuit of beauty—a widespread psychological phenomenon in contemporary society rather than a genuine mental disorder."It's perfectly understandable for young women to pursue beauty, as cosmetic surgery has become a fashion trend. The key is maintaining a rational approach to beauty enhancement. Beyond thorough pre-surgery preparation and scientifically selecting clinics and surgeons, heeding expert advice is crucial," emphasized Director Zhao of Oriental Plastic Surgery.
