Clams are nutritious and delicious, but they must be thoroughly cleaned before eating. So, what's the best way to clean clams? Today, I'll share a foolproof method tested countless times, guaranteed to get your clams spotless with a 100% success rate.Select fresh, live clams and rinse them thoroughly under running water several times until the water runs clear. Next, prepare a saltwater solution using a ratio of 10 pounds of water to 4 ounces of salt. Table salt works, but sea salt yields better results—ask your vendor for some.
2. Once the salt granules have completely dissolved, submerge the clams in the solution.Add a few drops of cooking oil to the water and stir with chopsticks. After half an hour, the clams will extend their tongues and spurt water. After about two hours, the sand inside the clams will be thoroughly expelled, and they can be safely used for cooking. Of course, the longer they soak, the better the results, but do not exceed one day, otherwise the clams will shrink.
Note: While many people use only salt or only oil, combining both yields the best results in the shortest time, ensuring the clams expel all sand effectively.
Additionally, to prevent clams from reabsorbing expelled sand, place them in a colander set over a basin during soaking, maintaining a 2-inch gap between the colander and basin. This allows expelled sand to settle at the bottom without being sucked back in.
3. Remove the thoroughly cleaned clams, rinse them with clean water, and they're ready for cooking.
Clams cleaned this way turn out quite clean. Clam lovers can follow this method to prepare their clams.
How to Clean Clam Meat Most Thoroughly
What if you bought clam meat instead? The method is also simple—
First, blanch the clam meat in boiling water. Then, use the blanching water to repeatedly rub the clam meat by hand. After doing this several times, the sand and mud in the clam meat will settle to the bottom. Finally, remove the clam meat and rinse it with clean water before eating.Alternatively, place shelled clam meat in clean water with one or two spoonfuls of salt. Stir in one direction, then rinse thoroughly with clean water!
If concerned that purchased clam meat hasn't expelled all sand, remove the "sand sacs." These are easily identifiable—they appear as dark masses within the meat. Simply remove them.
