Fruit acid skincare is currently trending for whitening and spot removal. However, when performed at home, improper concentration control can easily lead to hyperpigmentation due to excessive acid levels. In fact, applying brown sugar masks at home offers better and safer skin beautification effects than fruit acids.
Yang Weiling, Chief Physician of Dermatology at PLA Second Artillery General Hospital, notes that a recent Japanese study comparing brown sugar and fruit acids found that "molasses"—a natural component extracted from brown sugar—possesses detoxifying and whitening properties. Additionally, brown sugar contains carotene, riboflavin, niacin, amino acids, and glucose in brown sugar provide potent antioxidant and repair benefits for skin cells. It also contains natural antioxidants like stigmasterol and phyllosterol, which significantly combat aging by promoting rapid cell regeneration after detoxification. This approach achieves skin brightening at the cellular level without any side effects.
Beauty-conscious women may try the brown sugar detox mask—a simple method easily done at home. Heat 3 tablespoons of brown sugar in a small pot until melted into a thick paste. Remove from heat, let cool, then apply to cleansed face. Rinse off after 15–30 minutes. Repeat twice weekly.
