Body odor is hereditary. If either parent has body odor, their children have a 50% chance of inheriting it. If both parents have body odor, the likelihood increases significantly. However, body odor is not contagious. This is because the apocrine glands in the human body have large intercellular spaces, allowing macromolecules like lipids to be excreted through these glands. These substances are then broken down by surface bacteria, rather than being caused by pathogens. Therefore, interacting with someone who has body odor will not cause you to develop it.
"Contagion" of body odor can be eliminated with medication
Body odor arises from the interaction between specific unsaturated fatty acids secreted by apocrine glands and certain bacteria. While apocrine gland odor is hereditary, it is not contagious. However, under specific conditions—such as intimate contact between partners or wearing unwashed clothing of someone with body odor—mild transmission can occur. Since the "infected" individual's apocrine glands function normally, symptoms are mild. Treatment involves applying a small amount of medication to the armpits for complete resolution.
Body odor may diminish or disappear with age
Due to heightened apocrine gland activity during adolescence, body odor is most common among young adults. However, as bodily functions decline with age, apocrine gland secretions gradually diminish, leading to a reduction or complete disappearance of the odor.
Maintaining personal hygiene can reduce body odor
The warm, moist environment of the armpits is a breeding ground for bacteria. Persistent dampness in this area can worsen body odor. Therefore, the first step in reducing body odor is to prioritize personal hygiene: bathe regularly, change clothes frequently, and keep the skin dry and clean.
A light diet can reduce body odor
Excessive consumption of spicy or stimulating foods can disrupt sweat gland function, worsening body odor. Individuals with this condition should prioritize a light diet in their daily meals. A light diet aids digestion in the stomach and intestines, promoting the elimination of waste substances and excess fluids from the body.
