Experts indicate that this "water-injected pork" poses health risks comparable to water-injected beef or lamb. Since pork appears frequently on family tables, the danger is heightened when butchers use contaminated water for injection. To minimize water loss, they sometimes add chemicals to the injection solution, further increasing the hazards of this practice.
How to Identify Watered-Down Pork
With so much pork sold in markets, avoiding watered-down pork is challenging. How can we spot it? A veteran pork producer and seller shares five methods to detect watered-down pork:
1. Inspect
Check for inspection and quarantine stamps and other certification marks.
2. Visual inspection
Unwatered pork has a vibrant red color, while watered pork typically appears paler.
4. Touch Test
Unwatered pork sticks to your fingers upon contact, while watered pork has no surface stickiness.
5. Paper Test
Place paper on watered pork—it quickly becomes saturated. When removed, the paper shows no grease residue.
