Modern women are delaying childbirth, especially when planning a second child, often becoming advanced-age mothers unintentionally. Once classified as advanced-age, many expectant mothers assume natural childbirth is out of reach—but this isn't true. Advanced-age mothers can still deliver vaginally, provided they manage blood sugar throughout pregnancy, avoid excessive nutrition, maintain regular exercise, and refuse to become couch potatoes.
Aiming for natural birth? Expectant mothers should avoid overeating
Does advanced maternal age automatically rule out natural birth? Advanced age alone is not an indication for cesarean section. Even older mothers can deliver vaginally if their pregnancy progresses well—meaning gestation reaches 36 weeks, the fetal head is engaged, pelvic dimensions are adequate, amniotic fluid levels are normal, and the baby is not macrosomic.
Among these factors, fetal size is most easily controlled. The ideal fetal weight is 5 to 7 jin (approximately 2.5-3.5 kg). However, traditional Chinese beliefs prioritize heavier newborns, with parents often taking pride in babies weighing 8 or 9 jin (4-5 kg). Expectant mothers who overeat during pregnancy risk fetal macrosomia, which complicates natural birth.
During each prenatal checkup, the fundal height and abdominal circumference are measured. If these exceed normal ranges, it may indicate fetal macrosomia, necessitating dietary adjustments. Particularly after 32 weeks, when fetal weight increases rapidly, expectant mothers should avoid excessive nutrition and limit intake of high-fat, high-sugar, and high-oil foods.

Additionally, expectant mothers should monitor blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Poor blood sugar control can also lead to macrosomia, increasing the difficulty of natural delivery. Since the fetus obtains glucose from the mother via the placenta, elevated maternal blood sugar keeps the fetus in a prolonged hyperglycemic state. This excess glucose is converted into surplus fat and protein, resulting in abundant subcutaneous fat and rapid weight gain, ultimately causing macrosomia.Beyond complicating delivery, macrosomic infants face higher obesity risks later in life, making them susceptible to diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic conditions.In reality, numerous safe exercise options remain available during pregnancy. Engaging in these activities not only prevents excessive weight gain but also strengthens muscles crucial for childbirth, facilitating a smoother delivery.
To ensure a successful delivery, expectant mothers must begin prenatal preparation as early as the fourth month of pregnancy. During this period, practicing prenatal exercises is recommended. These exercises involve gentle movements that are simple to learn (performable without equipment or using a fitness ball).The primary movements involve half-squats supplemented by upper-body exercises. This approach strengthens muscles crucial for labor (such as the pelvic floor) while maintaining abdominal muscle elasticity. It helps prevent stretch marks and promotes faster postpartum recovery across the body.When walking, expectant mothers also stimulate their baby's movement. Daily walks should last between 30 minutes to 1 hour. Pay attention to pace and choose locations with good air circulation, fewer people, and a pleasant environment. It's important to note that while moderate exercise is necessary for expectant mothers, they should choose activities based on their individual condition. If a doctor advises during a hospital visit that the mother has physical abnormalities and exercise is unsuitable, she should stop exercising immediately.During exercise, adjust intensity based on how you feel. If possible, have a family member accompany you. Maintain moderate activity levels and stay hydrated before, during, and after exercise. Never continue if you experience abdominal pain, bloating, shortness of breath, fainting, dizziness, or other discomfort. Stop immediately and consult your doctor if any of these symptoms occur.
