Postpartum Care Considerations for Older Mothers

Some mothers experience elation and heightened emotions upon seeing their newborn, while others may feel depressed or even discouraged due to factors like the baby's gender. Both emotional states can affect uterine contractions and lead to postpartum hemorrhage.
III. Initiate Breastfeeding
The first feeding should occur within half an hour of birth, accompanied by skin-to-skin contact with the baby. This stimulates milk production and greatly benefits the mother's uterine recovery.
IV. Monitor Bleeding Closely
Stay under observation in the delivery room for the first two hours postpartum, as this is the highest-risk period for bleeding. Continue observation in the ward for 2-24 hours afterward, as bleeding may still occur. You can massage your uterus to help reduce bleeding. Pain from perineal wounds and uterine contractions is common this day; resting in a supine position is recommended.
V. Dietary Considerations
Postpartum hunger is common. Opt for mild, easily digestible foods like brown sugar millet porridge, red date rice porridge, chicken soup noodles, crucian carp soup with noodles, or boiled eggs. After eating, enjoy a restful nap.
VI. Special Attention to Personal Hygiene
During the postpartum period, increased perineal discharge requires daily cleansing of the external genitalia with warm water or a 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution. Change perineal pads frequently to maintain cleanliness and dryness in the perineal area.
VII. Timely Elimination
Women who delivered vaginally should attempt urination within 4 hours postpartum, pass urine within 6 hours, and have their first bowel movement within 24-48 hours.
VIII. Early Mobilization< />Begin bed exercises immediately after delivery, such as turning over, lifting legs, contracting the abdomen, and performing Kegel exercises.Generally, women who deliver vaginally should get out of bed and walk on the second day postpartum. However, take care to avoid exposure to cold drafts. Under medical supervision, performing simple daily exercises or postpartum calisthenics can aid recovery and help maintain a healthy figure.
