What foods should hypertensive patients avoid? As hypertension prevalence rises, more people prioritize dietary management. So which foods should hypertensive patients steer clear of?
Foods Hypertension Patients Should Avoid
1. Alcohol
Alcohol consumption accelerates heart rate, constricts blood vessels, and elevates blood pressure. It also promotes the deposition of calcium salts and cholesterol on arterial walls, accelerating atherosclerosis. Heavy, long-term drinking further induces atherosclerosis and exacerbates hypertension. Therefore, hypertension patients should abstain from alcohol.
2. Dog Meat
While hypertension has multiple causes, most cases involve yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity. Dog meat warms the kidneys and boosts yang energy, potentially worsening this type of hypertension.Other hypertension types—such as kidney yang deficiency, disturbed floating yang, internal phlegm-fire accumulation, or blood stasis obstructing collaterals—may be adversely affected by dog meat consumption. It may agitate floating yang, exacerbate phlegm-fire, or fuel fire-drying blood, all detrimental to the condition. Thus, it is unsuitable for consumption.
3. Animal Proteins
Hypertension patients should limit or avoid animal proteins (e.g., liver, eggs) as harmful substances produced during protein metabolism can cause blood pressure fluctuations. Opt for high-biological-value proteins like fish and milk in daily diets. Certain proteins (e.g., aminoethylsuccinic acid, tyrosine) exhibit hypotensive effects.
4. Spicy Foods
Spicy and refined foods can cause dry, hard stools and constipation. Straining during bowel movements increases abdominal pressure, leading to sudden blood pressure spikes that may trigger cerebral hemorrhage. Therefore, hypertensive patients should avoid spicy and refined foods.
5. High-Calorie Foods
High-calorie foods (glucose, sucrose, chocolate, etc.) can induce obesity. Obese individuals have a higher incidence of hypertension than those of normal weight. Hypertension patients often have overweight or obesity. Therefore, patients with this condition should limit high-calorie foods in their diet.
6. Meat Products
These foods are high in fat. While they provide protein, they contain significant amounts of saturated fatty acids, which can elevate blood lipid levels and trigger coronary heart disease. Therefore, individuals with hypertension should limit salt intake.
8. Strong Tea
Individuals with hypertension should avoid strong tea, especially strong black tea. Black tea contains the highest levels of theobromine, which can cause brain stimulation, restlessness, insomnia, palpitations, and other discomforts, thereby raising blood pressure. Drinking mild green tea, however, is beneficial for treating hypertension.
9. Strong-Flavored Biscuits
Foods prone to causing bloating, such as sweet potatoes and dried beans, should be consumed sparingly by hypertensive patients. Additionally, biscuits with intense flavors should be limited due to their high sugar and salt content.
10. Excessively salty foods
Limit daily salt intake to 2-5 grams. Salt can cause small artery spasms, elevate blood pressure, and accelerate renal arteriolar sclerosis. Excessive salt also promotes water and sodium retention, leading to edema.
11. High-cholesterol foods
Hypertension patients should limit animal fats and other cholesterol-rich foods (such as egg yolks, organ meats, fish roe, shrimp, crab roe, squid, etc.).
12. Chicken Broth
While chicken broth offers high nutritional value, frequent consumption can elevate blood pressure. Therefore, it should not be indiscriminately used as a nutritional supplement for patients, especially those with hypertension. Consuming chicken broth may worsen the condition and prove detrimental to health.
