What Is an Abdominal Pregnancy?

Abdominal pregnancy is a relatively uncommon type of pregnancy occurring outside the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, or broad ligaments—specifically within the abdominal cavity.
Based on its development, abdominal pregnancy can be classified as primary or secondary. Primary abdominal pregnancy, where the fertilized egg implants directly on the peritoneum, mesentery, or greater omentum, is quite rare.
Secondary abdominal pregnancy frequently occurs following tubal pregnancy miscarriage or rupture. Occasionally, it may follow ovarian pregnancy or uterine pregnancy where uterine defects lead to rupture.
Most abdominal pregnancies ultimately result in embryonic necrosis. Only in very rare cases does the pregnancy progress to mid-term gestation or even fetal maturity, with these outcomes being highly improbable.
