Feeding Your Baby This Way Can Help Prevent Illness (Public Health Network)
I. Eat More Seasonal Fruits in Moderation
Autumn is fruit season, and many seasonal fruits are nutrient-rich foods that greatly benefit improving children's immunity. For example, grapes and fresh jujubes are rich in iron, helping to replenish iron levels; pears and persimmons can prevent coughs and pharyngitis; oranges and tangerines have high vitamin C content, which helps prevent colds.Increasing fruit intake while reducing low-nutrient snacks and cold beverages supports autumn disease prevention.
2. Avoid cold foods in diet
When serving fruit, avoid chilling it in the refrigerator or soaking it in cold water as done in summer. As temperatures drop, children's digestive systems become less tolerant of cold foods, increasing susceptibility to cold-induced diarrhea.Reduce consumption of out-of-season fruits like watermelon and cantaloupe. Avoid excessively cold foods to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort during the autumn-to-winter transition. III. Moderate Seafood Consumption Autumn brings plump crabs and succulent shrimp, with diverse seafood offering nutritional benefits for children. Many parents, valuing their nutritional content, frequently serve them or give large portions at once. However, due to red tides and other pollution common in summer and autumn, seafood often contains higher toxin levels, so consumption should be limited. Additionally, after eating shrimp or crab, be especially cautious about fruit intake, as children may experience diarrhea or stomach pain.
IV. Increase Intake of Mucous Membrane-Moisturizing Foods
Autumn's dry climate makes children susceptible to throat discomfort and coughs. For children with sensitive respiratory tracts, prepare foods that help moisturize respiratory mucous membranes. These include carrots, water chestnuts, honey, snow pears, and dried persimmons.Foods rich in vitamin A or beta-carotene—such as dark green vegetables, pumpkin, carrots, red-fleshed sweet potatoes, milk, and yogurt—enhance mucosal resistance. This helps protect children's respiratory tracts and reduces the risk of childhood illnesses like pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, whooping cough, and measles.Conversely, overly dry or excessively spicy foods should be consumed sparingly in autumn as they are detrimental to mucosal health. Examples include dry-roasted peanuts and sunflower seeds, potato chips, roasted beans, various puffed snacks, fried foods, dried fish slices, and spicy snacks.
V. Appropriately Increase High-Protein Foods
After enduring summer's intense heat, babies' waning appetites gradually recover, and their digestive and absorptive capacities strengthen. Their bodies need to replenish nutrients lost during summer to prepare for resisting winter's cold. The folk saying "gaining autumn weight" reflects this principle—eating some meat after autumn arrives serves this purpose. You can offer your baby moderate amounts of chicken, duck, fish, or shrimp, but prepare them using methods like steaming, boiling, or stewing. Avoid overly greasy or dry preparations.
