The mandibular region primarily influencing facial contours comprises three key areas: the chin, mandibular border, and mandibular angle. Preoperatively, the surgeon should holistically design these three components to achieve a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing facial profile.
The aesthetic appeal of the jawline often hinges on the prominence of the mandibular angle. In such cases, partial resection of the mandibular angle combined with treatment of thickened masseter muscles can yield immediate results. Surgical incisions may be placed either intraorally or along the submental skin crease.
The most advanced approach currently involves intraoral access to remove part of the mandible and deep masseter muscle for facial contouring. It's worth noting that some individuals with naturally attractive facial features may achieve a more refined appearance through minor mandibular angle reduction. Therefore, this procedure isn't exclusively for those with prominent angles; it can also benefit individuals seeking higher standards of facial contouring. However, such cases require careful consideration following consultation with an experienced surgeon, as the surgical demands are significantly higher. Precision in osteotomy is critical, warranting extra caution.
How long does facial contouring surgery typically take?
Surgery duration has significantly shortened, and discomfort has been reduced. Generally, intraoral approaches can be completed within 30-40 minutes. Postoperative recovery time has also shortened by several days compared to the past, allowing patients to resume normal work and daily life within 7-10 days.
Can I eat after surgery?
To prevent infection, fasting is required for the first 2 days post-surgery, with IV fluids providing necessary nutrition. After 48 hours, you may begin consuming liquids such as milk, juice, or broth. After 72 hours, semi-liquid foods like yogurt, egg custard, soft noodle soup, and congee can be introduced. Gradually transition to a normal diet thereafter, but avoid hard foods such as steamed buns or fried items for one month. Will I feel uncomfortable after surgery? Soft tissue swelling peaks around 3-4 days post-surgery, which is typically the most uncomfortable period.Subsequently, soft tissue swelling will significantly subside. By the seventh day when sutures are removed, acute edema has generally resolved, though mild swelling may persist. At this stage, work may resume as appropriate. This residual mild swelling resolves more slowly, typically requiring about one month, though some individuals may need longer. Generally, it does not interfere with normal daily activities or work. Full recovery may take 3-6 months.Temporary difficulty opening the mouth may occur post-surgery; avoid deliberately practicing wide mouth openings. Is hospitalization required after facial contouring surgery? Sutures are removed on the seventh day. If possible, a 7-day hospital stay is recommended. If time or circumstances do not permit, a minimum of 2-3 days is necessary. Patients can manage daily activities independently post-surgery and generally do not require a companion or caregiver.
Is infection possible?
Infection risk exists, occurring in approximately 1%-2% of cases. However, infection is manageable. It is typically controlled and resolved quickly through drainage, irrigation, and antibiotic use, without compromising surgical outcomes.
