At a Hong Kong symposium addressing children's aggressive behavior, scholars, educators, social workers, and parents concluded through discussion that such behavior stems from family, school, societal, and individual factors. Participants unanimously agreed that strengthening home-school collaboration and societal attention can effectively mitigate or even prevent aggressive behavior in children.
Feng Lishu, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong, stated that addressing children's aggressive behavior is most effective before age 10. Otherwise, peer influence during adolescence can exacerbate such tendencies. She defined aggressive behavior as including frequent defiance, emotional outbursts, bullying others, destroying property, and physical aggression. She analyzed that causes include overly strict parental discipline, parental marital issues, experiencing bullying or exclusion at school leading to feelings of being targeted, and exposure to violent content in television, computer games, and comics.
Dr. Tsang Kit-man, Associate Professor at HKU's Department of Social Work and Social Administration, recommended promoting home-school collaboration to support children's healthy development. She noted that the greatest challenge in home-school collaboration lies in parents and teachers failing to coordinate closely and address emerging issues promptly. Close, trusting, and mutually understanding home-school partnerships can effectively improve children's aggressive behaviors. At the seminar, parent Ms. Xie shared her personal experience, illustrating the critical importance of home-school collaboration in educational interactions with children exhibiting aggressive behaviors.
