Three daily meals are essential for sustaining our body's energy. To maintain good health, not only should each meal be nutritious, but we must also be mindful of many bad habits after eating. Many poor post-meal habits can unknowingly impact our health. So, what should you avoid doing immediately after eating?
1. Avoid eating fruit immediately
Fruits contain flavonoid compounds that, after ingestion, are converted by gut bacteria into dihydroxybenzoic acid. Vegetables, meanwhile, contain thiocyanates. The interaction of these two chemicals can interfere with thyroid function, potentially leading to non-iodine-related goiter.
2. Avoid drinking tea immediately
Tannins in tea can bind with proteins and iron in food, forming colloidal substances or precipitates that are difficult to absorb. Over time, this may lead to iron deficiency anemia and protein deficiency diseases.
III. Avoid smoking immediately after meals
Post-meal gastric motility increases, blood circulation intensifies, and capillaries dilate, accelerating the absorption of harmful substances in tobacco smoke. Smoking after eating can increase the absorption of these toxins by over tenfold compared to regular smoking. Smokers, please be mindful of your health.
IV. Avoid vigorous exercise immediately after eating
Intense physical activity increases blood flow to the limbs, reducing blood supply to the gastrointestinal tract and impairing gastric juice secretion, which hinders digestion. Additionally, the enlarged stomach after eating combined with exercise can cause gastric ptosis.
5. Avoid reading immediately after meals
Reading right after eating diverts blood flow away from the digestive tract, reducing gastric secretion. Over time, this can lead to indigestion, bloating, and stomach pain.
6. Avoid bathing immediately after meals
Bathing causes dilation of skin capillaries, diverting blood flow from the digestive tract and impairing food digestion and absorption.
7. Avoid drinking large amounts of water immediately
Drinking water right after eating increases intra-gastric pressure, causing food to enter the small intestine before proper digestion. Additionally, water dilutes gastric juices, weakening their digestive power and reducing their ability to kill bacteria, which may lead to gastrointestinal disorders.
8. Avoid drinking carbonated beverages immediately
Carbonated drinks dilute gastric juices upon entering the stomach, impairing digestion and reducing appetite. They also produce carbon dioxide, increasing intra-gastric pressure and potentially causing acute gastric distension.
9. Avoid consuming sugar immediately
Sugar readily converts to fat, contributing to obesity. It also diminishes pancreatic secretion function, promoting the onset of diabetes.
So how long after eating should one wait before engaging in these activities? Food remains in the stomach for about 1 hour for carbohydrates, 2-3 hours for proteins, and 5-6 hours for fats. Therefore, at least 1 hour after eating is recommended before such activities. However, flexibility is key. For instance, if thirsty, drink water after meals—don't be rigid about the timing.
