Though wind-cold colds are common in winter, modern individuals often spend prolonged periods indoors with heating or air conditioning, leading to stagnant air and symptoms of wind-heat colds such as mental fogginess, dry mouth and sore throat, fever, and headaches. For coughs caused by wind-heat colds, the common fruit star fruit can provide relief.
Method: Take 100g of fresh star fruit, mash it to extract juice, add rock sugar to taste, and simmer before drinking; or eat fresh star fruit 2-3 times daily, 1-2 pieces each time.Star fruit is one of Lingnan's renowned fruits. It is considered sweet and sour in taste, cold in nature, and enters the lung, stomach, and small intestine meridians. It clears heat, generates fluids, promotes urination, and detoxifies. It can be used for wind-heat cough, sore throat, thirst, urinary calculi (urinary system stones), mouth and tongue ulcers, toothache, malaria, and alcohol toxicity. The Compendium of Materia Medica records that star fruit "primarily treats wind-heat conditions and generates fluids to quench thirst." The Lingnan Record of Medicinal Gathering states: "It quenches thirst, relieves irritability, and dispels heat. It promotes urination, and (its juice) applied topically is highly effective for children's mouth sores."Starfruit contains abundant sugars, vitamins, and organic acids—essential substances for vital bodily functions. Regular consumption supplements nutrition and enhances disease resistance. It also dispels internal heat accumulation, clears dryness, moistens the intestines, and promotes bowel movements, making it the most suitable heat-clearing fruit for those with lung or stomach heat. Its high content of volatile compounds and carotenoid-like substances prevents wind-heat toothaches and alleviates pharyngitis and oral ulcers.
Note: Star fruit has a cold nature. Those with spleen-stomach deficiency-cold, weak lungs, poor appetite, or diarrhea should consume it sparingly.
