The human body has twelve primary meridians, whose functions correspond to the twelve hours of the day. From 1 to 3 a.m., the Liver Meridian is active, and at 3 a.m., it connects with the Lung Meridian. Between 3 and 5 a.m., the Lung Meridian's qi and blood follow the Zi-Wu flow sequence, reaching peak vitality during this period.
Individuals with compromised lung function may experience coughing during this period as the lungs detoxify.
Accurate Location and Pathway of the Lung Meridian
>The Lung Meridian of the Hand-Taiyin originates in the middle jiao region of the abdomen. It connects downward to the large intestine, ascends along the diaphragm to the lungs, then traverses laterally from the lungs to the Zhongfu point near the clavicle. It continues along the axilla, descending along the inner edge of the arm through the thenar eminence, and terminates at the Shaoshang point, located 0.1 cun above the radial nail fold of the thumb.
Branch: A branch of the Lung Meridian diverges from Lieque (LI4) (on the radial side of the forearm, 1.5 cun above the wrist crease), descends along the back of the hand to Shangyang (LI1) on the radial side of the index finger, and intersects with the Large Intestine Meridian.
Is the Lung Meridian present on both hands?
Yes.
All twelve regular meridians in the human body exhibit symmetrical distribution. These twelve meridians comprise the six Yin meridians of the hands and feet, along with the six Yang meridians of the hands and feet. Some practitioners utilize this symmetry in treatment—addressing left-side ailments by treating the right side, and vice versa.
However, the Eight Extra Meridians are not necessarily symmetrically distributed. For instance, the Conception and Governor Vessels run along the front and back midlines of the body.
What are the symptoms of Lung Meridian blockage?
Respiratory discomfort
When the Lung Meridian is obstructed, the most prominent symptom is respiratory discomfort such as chest tightness, coughing, and wheezing.Since the lungs connect to the mouth and nose, this can also lead to sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose.
Skin discomfort
The lungs govern the skin and hair. When the lung meridian becomes blocked, the skin's surface may reflect discomfort, manifesting as redness, swelling, itching, and other irritations.
Bowel Irregularities
The lungs are paired with the large intestine. Blockage in the lung meridian can disrupt the large intestine's function, leading to bowel irregularities.
