Among prostate diseases, prostate cancer poses the greatest threat. Early-stage prostate cancer often presents with subtle symptoms, but as the disease progresses, urinary issues like difficulty urinating and incontinence may arise. Advanced prostate cancer significantly jeopardizes patients' lives, making prevention crucial—especially for obese individuals.
Researchers studied 194 prostate cancer patients alongside an equal number of non-cancerous prostate enlargement or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients undergoing treatment. The study found that while being overweight alone does not necessarily increase prostate cancer risk, obesity elevates the risk by 2.5 times.
In this study, researchers sought to eliminate certain confounding factors—such as age and ethnicity—that had previously caused conflicting results across studies. All participants were age-matched Caucasians undergoing prostate cancer treatment at the same hospital.Researchers stated that in Western countries where obesity has reached epidemic levels, dietary changes and other public health measures directly targeting obesity prevention could potentially reduce the likelihood of other obesity-related issues, including prostate cancer.
How to Prevent Obesity
Obese individuals, particularly middle-aged and older men, are at higher risk for prostate cancer. A scientifically balanced diet, healthy eating habits, and beneficial physical activity are crucial measures to reduce obesity rates. Efforts should focus on strengthening obesity awareness campaigns and behavioral interventions to increase weight loss awareness among overweight and obese populations. Mastering scientifically effective weight loss methods is essential to prevent obesity and its related diseases while improving living standards.
Experts advise obese individuals to manage their weight through daily habits: avoid high-calorie foods, engage in appropriate physical exercise, and seek prompt treatment for prostate symptoms to prevent disease progression and the potential development of prostate cancer.
