We all know the navel is the closest point between our internal organs and the outside world, making it prone to various issues—one being an unpleasant odor. While some may instinctively pick at their navel, this is actually inadvisable. So what should you do instead? Let's explore some solutions below.
Ancient Chinese medicine held that the navel is the foundation of the five viscera and six bowels, the root where vital energy returns and is stored. In traditional Chinese medicine, the navel is a crucial acupoint—the location of the Shenque point—and the skin in this area is exceptionally delicate. Precisely because of this, the navel is most vulnerable to cold exposure. However, the navel is not an open cavity; it is merely the scar left after the umbilical cord was severed. It is flat and has no direct connection to internal organs.
For young women, especially those menstruating, blood vessels are engorged. Wearing crop tops exposes the abdomen to cold, causing pelvic blood vessels to constrict. This impedes menstrual blood flow, potentially leading to dysmenorrhea, prolonged periods, and irregular cycles over time.
Why shouldn't you pick at your belly button?
The belly button is the closest point between your internal organs and the outside world. Never pick at it forcefully. You can try gently wiping it with a damp cotton swab, but be extremely gentle. Only clean the easily accessible edges.Essentially, the navel is the scar left after the umbilical cord is cut. It can appear as a small indentation or a slight protrusion. The abdominal muscles below the navel create a hollow space where dirt can easily accumulate. If not cleaned promptly, this can lead to unpleasant odors. On the other hand, everyone's navel naturally produces some secretions. While a small amount serves a protective function, the indented area is highly prone to trapping water and grime. If not thoroughly rinsed after bathing, dirty water can accumulate in the navel, drying slowly and eventually forming dark, sticky residue—commonly known as "navel dirt."
How to Clean It Safely
Don't blindly believe claims that skipping navel cleaning prevents illness—the more grime builds up, the easier it is for bacteria to multiply!
Since the navel connects to internal organs and is a delicate area, simply wrap your finger in a towel and gently clean it during your daily shower. Avoid scrubbing too hard.
Use a soft tool like a cotton swab dipped in body wash for gentle, spot cleaning.
If dark grime appears in the navel, gently clean it daily without vigorous scrubbing. It will restore its natural whiteness within a few days.
Never scrub as forcefully as you would when washing your body or picking your nose. This could irritate abdominal organs (primarily the small intestine), causing digestive discomfort—namely, stomach pain.
