(1) Ear Examination in Routine Checkups
Doctors use specialized tools to inspect the external appearance of the ear.Ear examinations primarily include otoscopy, Eustachian tube function testing, hearing tests, vestibular function testing, fistula tests, and other assessments. Typically, the doctor first observes the size, position, and symmetry of the auricle, checking for any deformities. They also examine the auricle, mastoid process, and surrounding lymph nodes for swelling, tenderness, or pain upon pressure.
(2) Genetic Testing
Many cases of drug-induced deafness result from excessive use of aminoglycoside antibiotics, including common agents like gentamicin, streptomycin, kanamycin, and neomycin. However, if patients are unaware they carry a deafness-related gene mutation, hearing impairment may still occur even with normal dosage."Early detection of 'latent' deafness-causing genes through genetic screening and careful medication use can reduce this risk."
Methods to alleviate ear discomfort
1. Use your thumb, index, and middle fingers to massage the auricle and the neck area behind the ear over ten times. Then press and knead the acupoints Ermen (GB1), Tinggong (GB1), Tinghui (GB1), and Yifeng (GB1) for 15-30 seconds each.
2. Use your thumb, index, and middle fingers to gently pull the ear lobe more than ten times. Then insert your middle finger into the ear canal and perform rapid vibrations. Simultaneously, the patient should pinch their nose and exhale forcefully outward. Repeat this sequence 2-3 times.
3. Gently lift and pinch the ear lobe 20-30 times daily, morning and evening.
