A recent study by British scientists published in the British Journal of Urology indicates that daily consumption of tomato soup enhances lycopene absorption, potentially boosting male fertility. The exact mechanism by which lycopene influences fertility remains unclear. Researchers speculate that antioxidants in lycopene may neutralize harmful chemicals affecting fertility.
According to the UK's Daily Telegraph, researchers from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Portsmouth randomly selected six healthy men with an average age of 42. They were instructed to consume one 400-gram can of tomato soup daily for two consecutive weeks. The researchers found that the men's semen lycopene levels increased by 7% to 12%. It is known that infertile men have lower lycopene levels in their semen. Therefore, the researchers believe that the enhanced male fertility is linked to increased lycopene levels.
Previous studies have shown that lycopene has potential therapeutic effects on various conditions, such as exercise-induced asthma, and can also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.Tomatoes are already considered a health food due to their rich lycopene content, but this marks the first time scientists have identified tomatoes as beneficial for male fertility.
Boosting Male Fertility Through Diet
1. Consume magnesium-rich foods. Magnesium helps regulate heart function, lower blood pressure, prevent heart disease, and enhance male fertility.
Men are advised to consume two bowls of oatmeal with milk and one banana for breakfast. Magnesium-rich foods include soybeans, potatoes, walnuts, oatmeal, pasta, leafy greens, and seafood.
2. Arginine is a key component of sperm head production and enhances sperm motility.
Rich sources include sea cucumber, eel, loach, cuttlefish, sesame seeds, Chinese yam, ginkgo nuts, tofu skin, frozen tofu, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and hazelnuts. Sea cucumber, for instance, has long been prized as a tonic for kidney health, essence replenishment, and virility enhancement.
3. Sperm is rich in the trace element zinc, which plays a significant role in maintaining male reproductive function.
As zinc is essential for sperm metabolism and enhances sperm motility, consuming zinc-rich foods such as oysters, shrimp, clams, shellfish, animal liver, walnuts, milk, beans, bran, and lotus seeds is necessary.Oysters contain the highest zinc concentration among foods. Adequate zinc intake supports sperm nucleic acid and protein metabolism while enhancing sexual function. However, daily zinc consumption must not exceed 15 micrograms, as excessive intake may interfere with other minerals' functions in the body. 120 grams of lean meat contains 7.5 micrograms of zinc.
4. Calcium plays a pivotal role in sperm motility, capacitation, maintaining hyaluronidase activity, and the fertilization process.
Calcium deficiency slows sperm movement and reduces acrosomal protease activity. Therefore, men should also focus on consuming calcium-rich foods such as milk, soy products, sardines, pork rib soup, laver, dried shrimp, kelp, wakame, daylily buds, shiitake mushrooms, mustard greens, coriander, sweet almonds, and raisins.
5. Additionally, sperm motility correlates with fructose levels in the seminal vesicles.
Low fructose in semen readily causes necrospermia. Fructose is abundant in honey and fruits like pears, apples, grapes, pineapples, and sweet oranges—consumption should be emphasized.Traditional Chinese medicine recommends foods that nourish essence, strengthen yang, and replenish vitality, such as river shrimp, sparrow meat, beef, dog meat, fish maw, walnuts, chives, and goji berries, which may also be incorporated into the diet.
How Men Can Prevent and Treat Infertility
1.Timely vaccination and good personal hygiene are essential to prevent infectious diseases that harm male fertility, such as mumps and sexually transmitted infections.
2. Acquire basic sexual health knowledge, understand male physiological characteristics and health maintenance. If any unusual changes in the testicles are noticed—such as swelling, hardening, unevenness, or pain—seek prompt medical attention.
3. If you frequently handle radioactive materials, high temperatures, or toxic substances, strictly follow operational protocols and protective guidelines. Never be careless. If you plan to conceive soon, it's best to avoid such work for at least six months before trying to conceive.
4. Testicles are highly sensitive organs that function optimally at temperatures approximately 1°C lower than body temperature. Elevated temperatures impair sperm production. Avoid activities that raise scrotal temperature, such as prolonged bicycle riding, hot baths, or wearing tight jeans.
5. Modify unhealthy habits: quit smoking and drinking; avoid excessively greasy foods, which can diminish libido; additionally, take care to avoid exposure to toxic substances in daily life.
6. Prioritize premarital health examinations to detect abnormalities early, preventing marital distress. After marriage, regularly discuss sexual issues with your spouse, fostering mutual cooperation and understanding.
