A U.S. study found that attractive men and women are 26% more likely to have a daughter as their first child than a son—no wonder so many celebrities have beautiful daughters as their firstborns.
The research also revealed that parents' good looks are passed down to daughters but not sons. Don't blame your parents for your appearance. Scientists discovered that boys inherit only "masculine traits" from their fathers, while their physical attractiveness isn't determined by their parents' looks.Daughters, however, can inherit attractiveness from both parents.
David Perrett and Elizabeth Conway of the University of St Andrews in Scotland led this research.
The team analyzed hundreds of family photographs, including images of individuals with their parents taken over several years. They rated the photos for attractiveness, masculinity in males, and femininity in females.
Results showed fathers passed on masculinity to sons but not physical attractiveness, while mothers similarly failed to pass on beauty to sons. Previous theories suggested women chose attractive partners due to biological instincts. The results revealed that fathers pass on masculinity to their sons but not physical attractiveness, while mothers similarly fail to pass on beauty to their sons. Previous studies suggested women choose attractive partners because biological instinct drives them to ensure their sons inherit good-looking genes, but this new research overturns that hypothesis.
