Nasolabial folds are common facial wrinkles that significantly impact appearance and demeanor once formed. Consequently, numerous methods for reducing them circulate online. Yet few can accurately define what nasolabial folds truly are. Professor Feng Chuanbo from the Plastic Surgery Department at Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, previously explained that these folds—also known as "eight-character lines" or nasolabial grooves—refer to the symmetrical creases extending from the sides of the nostrils toward the corners of the mouth.
Nasolabial folds: A concept from physiognomy, aging, and gravity
According to Professor Feng Chuanbo, the term "nasolabial folds" originates from physiognomy. In physiognomy, these folds symbolize authority and command, suggesting that individuals with such lines possess leadership presence and career success.
Of course, from a scientific perspective, nasolabial folds have little to do with authority. Professor Feng Chuanbo explains that their formation fundamentally results from aging and the effects of gravity. "When facial skin and tissues become lax, they begin to sag under the pull of gravity."However, several muscle insertion points on either side of the nostrils—such as the zygomaticus major and minor muscles—activate during facial expressions. When the zygomatic tissue sags, these points provide support. Due to the presence of these muscle insertion points, the sagging tissue cannot descend further, ultimately forming a 'step' at this location. This is the nasolabial fold, or what we commonly refer to as nasolabial folds."
In summary, nasolabial folds are an inevitable product of aging. Most women begin developing them around age 35, with their prominence increasing with age.
What methods can eliminate nasolabial folds? Experts: Nasolabial folds cannot be permanently cured
Countless articles online discuss methods for reducing nasolabial folds,Generally, there are four main approaches to reducing nasolabial folds:
Makeup concealment: Foundation can partially mask skin imperfections, including nasolabial folds. Apply concealer to the folds, then gently press and blend with your fingers. Remember to carry touch-up products like powder compacts for timely application.
Daily Skincare: While nasolabial folds are theoretically inevitable, diligent skincare can indeed delay their appearance. After cleansing morning and night, apply anti-wrinkle serums containing ingredients like vitamin A, polyphenols, and botanical extracts that boost collagen and fibroblast production. For targeted care, apply anti-wrinkle serum specifically to the area from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth where nasolabial folds form.
Facial Massage: Massage the Jiache acupoint, located approximately one finger-width above and forward of the jawline. Stimulating this point promotes lymphatic and blood circulation in the lower jaw area, helping reduce nasolabial folds. The technique is simple: first, alternate hands to massage from the chin to the base of the ear. Then, use your thumbs to press and hold the Jiache point for 1–2 minutes. Repeat this massage 2–3 times daily.
Medical Aesthetic Treatments: While daily care and facial massage offer limited improvement, effectively eliminating nasolabial folds requires medical aesthetic interventions. Depending on severity, options include hyaluronic acid fillers or facelift surgery.
However, Professor Feng Chuanbo emphasizes that aging is an unstoppable natural process, and nasolabial folds cannot be completely eradicated. Even after undergoing medical procedures to address them, facial skin and muscles may still sag over time, causing the folds to reappear.
