Normal discharge should be milky white or clear, slippery in texture like egg whites, minimal in quantity, with a faint fishy odor or no smell at all. It serves as a natural protective barrier. So why does discharge turn brown? Experts indicate that brown discharge is often caused by local inflammation and should be examined by a doctor.
Vaginal discharge is a white fluid secreted from the vagina, primarily serving to inhibit bacterial growth. It's crucial to consider how the menstrual cycle affects the characteristics of vaginal secretions.
The cervix produces cervical mucus, composed mainly of water and squamous and columnar epithelial cells. Cervical mucus is hormone-dependent, meaning its quantity and properties vary with hormonal fluctuations.
Under the influence of estrogen, it appears clear and watery, especially during ovulation when secretion increases significantly and it becomes elastic and highly stretchable. Under progesterone influence, it becomes thick and honeycomb-like.
It's understandable that women are highly sensitive about sexual hygiene, especially during intercourse. Therefore, any abnormal vaginal odor, increased discharge, irritation, itching, or dryness not only causes distress but may also lead both partners to avoid sexual activity. Vaginal infections are a major cause of foul-smelling discharge.
