What Causes Nasolabial Folds?
1. Collagen Loss and Skin Aging/Sagging
Beyond genetics, aging is the primary factor. As we age, collagen, moisture, and elastic fibers in the skin gradually diminish. Slower skin metabolism leads to accumulation of subcutaneous fat and dead skin cells, causing skin laxity and aging, resulting in epidermal depressions.
2. Expressive facial movements take their toll
While this may seem like the ultimate disregard for positivity, it is indeed a significant contributor to nasolabial folds. When you smile, the muscles around your mouth and nose contract, causing the folds to extend from the sides of your nostrils to the corners of your mouth. If your folds extend from the corners of your mouth to your chin, you should break the habit of pursing or pouting your lips.
