Causes of Nasolabial Folds
1. Collagen loss and skin aging/sagging
Beyond genetics, aging is the primary factor. As we age, collagen, moisture, and elastic fibers in the skin gradually diminish. Slower skin metabolism leads to accumulation of subcutaneous fat and dead skin cells, causing skin laxity and aging, resulting in epidermal indentations.
2. Facial expressions take their toll
While this may seem like the ultimate disregard for positivity, it is indeed a significant contributor to nasolabial folds. Smiling engages the muscles from the corners of the mouth to the sides of the nose, causing folds to extend from the nostrils to the mouth corners. If folds extend from the mouth corners to the chin, it's time to break habits like pursing or pouting the lips.
