Tofu is Nutritious, But Not for Excessive Consumption

It's widely known that tofu is rich in protein and highly nutritious, making it a common ingredient in dishes. While this is true—moderate tofu consumption does provide nutritional benefits—everything should be enjoyed in moderation, including food. So what are the risks of eating too much tofu? Despite its nutritional value, excessive consumption is not advisable.
The main risks of eating too much tofu include:
1.Under normal circumstances, plant-based proteins ingested undergo metabolic processes, with most ultimately becoming nitrogenous waste excreted by the kidneys. As people age, the kidneys' ability to eliminate waste diminishes. If one fails to adjust their diet and consumes large amounts of tofu, leading to excessive intake of plant-based proteins, it inevitably increases the production of nitrogenous waste in the body. This places additional strain on the kidneys, further deteriorating kidney function and adversely affecting overall health.
2. Traditional Chinese medicine classifies tofu as cold in nature. Individuals with cold stomachs, those prone to diarrhea or bloating, those with spleen deficiency, and those with kidney deficiency manifesting as frequent nocturnal emissions should also avoid excessive consumption. Overconsumption of tofu can cause harm, notably including digestive issues, accelerated atherosclerosis, iodine deficiency, and gout flare-ups.
3. American medical experts note that soy products contain abundant methionine, which converts to cysteine under enzymatic action. Cysteine damages arterial endothelial cells, facilitating cholesterol and triglyceride deposition on artery walls and accelerating atherosclerosis.Soybeans used to make tofu contain a substance called saponins, which not only prevent atherosclerosis but also promote iodine excretion from the body.
4. Long-term excessive consumption of tofu can easily cause iodine deficiency, leading to iodine deficiency disorders.Tofu contains relatively high levels of purines. Individuals with gout due to abnormal purine metabolism or elevated blood uric acid levels should limit consumption, as excessive intake may trigger gout attacks. Gout patients, in particular, should consume tofu sparingly.
Therefore, despite tofu's nutritional value, moderation is essential. Otherwise, it may fail to provide nutritional benefits and could even cause harm.
