What preparations should expectant mothers make before their first prenatal visit? Doing some homework beforehand is advisable. We recommend expectant mothers complete the following preparations before their initial checkup.
Preparations for the First Prenatal Visit (Public Health Network)
1. Familiarize yourself with the hospital environment
Once you've selected your hospital, visit in advance to understand the layout and facilities.Typically, prenatal visits involve departments such as the OB/GYN clinic, laboratory, ultrasound room, payment counter, pharmacy, and restroom locations. Hospitals usually have reception staff who can provide advance information on the prenatal process, including how to queue at each department (some require medical records, others examination forms, while some require in-person queuing), where to obtain urine cups, and peak traffic times.
2. Understand the health history of your immediate family and your partner's family members
If possible, have your partner accompany you to the checkup, especially for the first visit. He should be able to answer questions about his past health conditions and any family history of genetic disorders. He can also ask questions and learn about pregnancy-related matters, providing you with the best understanding and support throughout the pregnancy while sharing in the joy it brings.
3. Wear easy-to-remove clothing
Prep for blood draws, urine samples, and vaginal swabs by wearing loose-fitting tops with wide cuffs that roll up easily. Avoid skirts for ultrasounds—they can be awkward if the doctor is male or others are present.
4. Arrive on an empty stomach, bring snacks and water
Many blood tests require fasting. Bring snacks and water to eat and drink immediately after fasting tests to prevent low blood sugar.
5. Remember the date of your last menstrual period before pregnancy
Doctors use this date to calculate your due date and assess fetal growth. Be sure to recall the date of your final period before conception.
6. Utilize prenatal leave effectively
Prenatal leave policies vary by region and even by company. Working mothers should thoroughly understand their company's policy beforehand and make the most of their leave. Remember to request a prenatal visit certificate from your doctor during appointments to use as proof for taking leave.
