The first step in skincare for acne sufferers is facial cleansing. Acne-prone skin is often oily or combination, making it prone to dirt buildup. Combined with visible acne, the skin may appear excessively dirty.Consequently, many patients resort to using cleansers with exceptionally strong oil-control and cleansing properties, increase the frequency of washing, or use hot water and scrub vigorously. These are incorrect cleansing methods. The proper cleansing routine includes:
(1) Wash your face 2-3 times daily.
Although acne-prone skin is oily, the skin's surface naturally maintains a protective sebum layer that keeps it slightly acidic and inhibits bacterial growth. Frequent washing severely damages this layer, alkalizing the skin and creating an environment where bacteria thrive, worsening acne inflammation.Additionally, over-drying the skin can stimulate sebaceous glands to produce more oil as a protective response, failing to address the root cause of facial oiliness. Washing 2-3 times daily—once in the morning and evening, or once at noon—is sufficient. Individuals with specific acne types may adjust based on their condition.
(2) Rinse with cold water after washing with warm water
Acne patients should use warm water when washing their face. From a medical aesthetics perspective, warm water is actually recommended for everyone. While hot water may feel cleansing, it can irritate the skin and worsen inflammation. Cold water tightens pores but lacks cleansing power. It is advisable for patients to rinse with cool water after cleansing with warm water.
Additionally, acne sufferers should wash their faces gently, avoiding vigorous scrubbing to prevent further skin damage.
