I never imagined ultrasonic teeth cleaning would be so effective. In under 60 minutes, all my tartar and plaque vanished. My teeth feel healthier and cleaner than ever—the results are truly amazing! Seriously impressive! To prove my point, today I'll share my entire teeth cleaning process.
1. Understanding Ultrasonic Scaling
Ultrasonic scaling, also known as supragingival scaling (commonly called teeth cleaning), involves using scaling instruments to remove supragingival calculus, plaque, and stains while polishing tooth surfaces to delay plaque and calculus redeposition. However, since supragingival calculus is often connected to shallow subgingival calculus, professional cleaning should also remove calculus within the gingival crevice—roughly 3mm below the gum line. For deeper subgingival calculus, a separate scaling procedure is required later.
2. The Ultrasonic Scaling Process Explained
Rinse your mouth with mouthwash to prepare for the procedure.
The dentist begins cleaning your teeth using an ultrasonic scaler. Depending on tartar buildup, this typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. The ultrasonic scaler uses high-frequency vibrations to dislodge tartar from your teeth, achieving thorough cleaning. You may experience some discomfort during scaling. For example: pain, bleeding, or itching caused by vibrations. These are normal reactions. If you feel uncomfortable, raise your left hand to signal the dentist (do not attempt to speak), and they will pause to assist you. Salivation is common during scaling. Stay relaxed—tension may increase drooling. If needed, signal the dentist to rinse your mouth more frequently. The dentist typically plays soothing music at the start to help ease your nerves. After cleaning, different instruments may be used based on your tartar and tooth condition for a more thorough clean. Polishing usually takes about half an hour. It restores the smooth surface of your teeth, delays plaque reformation, and removes noticeable stains.Polishing may cause slight discomfort, feeling like something is grinding against your teeth. Due to vibrations, you might experience mild tooth sensitivity or numbness. However, it's less uncomfortable than using the ultrasonic scaler. Next, the ultrasonic scaler will be used to clean any remaining areas. The final step involves sandblasting, which also takes about 20 minutes.Sandblasting primarily cleans areas inaccessible to the ultrasonic scaler while removing surface stains and plaque. You'll initially taste saltiness, but this sensation diminishes over time. After ultrasonic scaling, dental photos will be taken for comparison with your pre-treatment condition. Temporary bleeding and discomfort immediately post-procedure are normal.
