Eyes are the primary facial feature conveying emotion. Beautiful, expressive eyes not only enhance one's refined appearance but also attract romantic opportunities—hence many relationship-related idioms originate from the eyes. The pursuit of large eyes has long been validated by the popularity of double eyelid surgery, and modern eye-shaping techniques now make perfect large eyes achievable.
Common double eyelid surgery methods include: suture technique, partial incision method, and suture closure. The suture technique suits thin eyelids, while the incision method is ideal for eyes with excess fat or significant ptosis. It's also necessary for revision surgery on eyes that have previously undergone eyelid procedures.
Suture Method
The suture method has gained popularity recently due to minimal post-operative swelling and no scarring. Individuals with thin upper eyelid skin and little fat who desire natural-looking double eyelids can achieve this without incisions. Three small stitches are placed on the upper eyelid, connecting the skin to the levator muscle to form the double eyelid. This procedure is simple and quick. Even if the shape is unsatisfactory, revision surgery is relatively straightforward. Postoperative swelling and bruising are significantly less than with the incision method. However, the risk of the double eyelid disappearing is slightly higher than with the incision method. Additionally, because there are three suture points, there is a possibility of small sacs protruding outward at the suture sites when the eyes are closed, and excessive opening at the suture sites when the eyes are open.In most cases, the sutures remain secure. However, over time, eyelid elasticity may diminish, leading to aging and ptosis, which could cause the double eyelid to fade. This fading is not due to suture loosening. Revision surgery can resolve this issue.
The suture method offers the advantage of a short procedure time, typically 20-30 minutes. It causes minimal damage to upper eyelid tissue, resulting in less swelling and a shorter recovery period. Acute swelling usually subsides within 4 days to a week post-surgery. Office workers need not take leave; undergoing surgery on a Saturday allows for a return to work on Monday.
Partial Incision Method
This technique combines the advantages of both incision and suture methods to achieve a more beautiful and natural-looking result. A small incision of about 1mm is made to determine the position of the double eyelid crease. A second incision of approximately 2mm is then made to remove fat. This method offers the benefits of fat removal through a small incision, natural-looking double eyelids without the need for a scalpel, and no surgical scarring. The double eyelid crease remains stable and clearly defined throughout.
Key advantages include minimal scarring from the small incision, effective fat removal, and a natural-looking result. Compared to the suture method, the crease is more durable and less prone to fading.
Suture Method
Double eyelid surgery using the suture method typically takes about half an hour. If fat removal or eye bag reduction is performed simultaneously, the procedure may take over an hour. The recovery period is approximately one week. Most redness and swelling subside after one week, and makeup application is generally permissible. However, it is advisable to use hypoallergenic cosmetics to minimize unnecessary skin irritation.
