The most significant difference between Asian and Western eyes typically lies in the presence or absence of double eyelids. Westerners possess eyelid muscles that reach the skin, allowing them to naturally form double eyelids by tightening the eyelid muscles. However, Asians rarely have this type of eyelid. Furthermore, compared to Westerners, Asians often have more orbital fat, central conjunctival tissue, and subcutaneous fat, making the eye area appear thicker. Additionally, the inner corner of the eye, known as the epicanthal fold, can make the space between the eyebrows appear wider and the eyes smaller.
Recently, influenced by Western culture, the preference for bright, double eyelids has become predominant. In reality, when most people with single eyelids open their eyes, the eyelid covers the eye, making it appear narrow and elongated. To achieve larger, brighter eyes, many opt for double eyelid surgery. However, since Asians possess different soft tissues and facial bone structures than Westerners, creating double eyelids that complement Asian features is far more important than simply imitating Western standards.
Method: For older individuals with thin, non-drooping eyelids, the suture method can create beautiful double eyelids.
The suture-based double eyelid procedure involves 6-10 incisions around the eye area, while the intermittent suture technique requires only 3-6 incisions. This increased area of adhesion between the skin and the tarsal plate tissue enhances the procedure's success rate and reduces the likelihood of the crease fading. Furthermore, the sutures are placed deep within the skin incisions, minimizing the risk of post-operative hardening.
Characteristics of suture-based double eyelid surgery:
This procedure is simple with minimal trauma, leaving no visible scars. Post-surgery swelling is mild, and recovery is rapid—natural-looking double eyelids typically appear within 15 to 20 days. However, if performed improperly, subcutaneous nodules may form, shortening the longevity of the double eyelid effect.
Methods to reduce swelling after suture double eyelid surgery:
1. Thoroughly cleanse the eye area before bedtime after suture double eyelid surgery.
2. After suture double eyelid surgery, apply refrigerated cucumber slices with mild skin-tightening properties to the eyelids for ten minutes of rest.
3. Elevate your head with multiple pillows while sleeping to promote natural swelling reduction.
4. Apply thin slices or mashed raw potato to the eyes for 15 minutes.
Generally, full recovery from suture-based double eyelid surgery takes about three months. Makeup can be applied one month post-surgery, but take care to protect the eyes and avoid allergic reactions.
