Botox for wrinkle reduction, facial slimming, calf slimming, gummy smile correction, and axillary hyperhidrosis treatment—as Botox's clinical applications expand, so does its beneficiary population. However, safety concerns persist. During consultations, patients frequently ask: "Can I receive Botox injections while pregnant?"Can I get Botox while breastfeeding? Can I conceive after Botox? What if I unexpectedly become pregnant shortly after Botox—is it safe to keep the baby? Could it cause fetal abnormalities? Today we address these concerns:
In China, only Hengli and Botox are approved by the National Medical Products Administration for clinical use. Below are excerpts from their pregnancy and lactation warnings:
Pregnancy
There is insufficient data on the use of this product in non-pregnant women. Animal studies indicate reproductive toxicity, though the relevance of this risk to humans remains unclear. Unless the benefits clearly outweigh potential risks, pregnant women should generally avoid this product.
Breastfeeding
There is no data on whether this product is excreted in breast milk. Its use is not recommended for breastfeeding women.
Can Botox be administered during pregnancy?
It is not absolutely prohibited if the therapeutic benefits outweigh the potential risks. However, if the purpose is solely cosmetic enhancement, the minimal benefit does not justify the risk to fetal safety. It is advisable to avoid Botox in such cases.
However, for conditions like severe cervical dystonia that significantly impair the pregnant woman's physical condition or pose life-threatening risks, Botox administration for treatment is warranted(Clinical literature exists for Botox®).
Can Botox® be administered during breastfeeding?
No, absolutely not.
No research has examined whether Botox® is excreted in breast milk, nor is it known if it could adversely affect infants.
What if you unexpectedly become pregnant shortly after receiving Botox?
The pregnancy should be maintained, but strict prenatal monitoring is essential. Any issues detected should be addressed promptly.
Theoretically, fetal developmental abnormalities from Botox occur only with repeated high-dose use. In standard treatments like facial slimming (using 100 units), the impact on the human body is negligible and can be disregarded.
However, given the potential risks to fetal development from today's living environment (where water, food, air, and housing may be severely polluted), the issue often becomes complicated. Neither pharmaceutical manufacturers nor treating physicians can confidently declare "this product is safe for pregnant women" while bearing this risk. Therefore, it is still recommended to wait at least three months after Botox treatment before considering pregnancy.
