In our society, gout affects a significant number of people, predominantly within the elderly population. The rising incidence of gout has drawn considerable attention from health enthusiasts. Chinese research indicates that this condition is closely linked to daily dietary habits.
So, what dietary restrictions should gout patients observe?
1.Limit Seasonings
While patients know to avoid seafood after experiencing gout attacks, they often overlook that seafood sauces, abalone sauce, and oyster sauce contain extremely high levels of purines. These condiments are primarily extracted from seafood or animal sources, making their purine content exceptionally high.Adding these sauces to meals can elevate uric acid levels, triggering recurrent gout attacks.
2. Limit coffee and tea consumption
While coffee and strong tea contain no purines, excessive intake can stimulate the autonomic nervous system. This stimulation is a contributing factor to gout flare-ups and may even trigger acute attacks. Therefore, individuals with gout should be mindful to minimize consumption of coffee or strong tea.Common high-purine foods include kidney beans, peas, peanuts, and spinach. When blood sugar levels are elevated, uric acid levels in urine also increase. Additionally, fruit and grape juices in beverages contain hidden sugars.
5. Limit organ meats
Whether in acute or chronic phases, purine intake should be strictly controlled in daily diets.Organ meats like animal offal and anchovies contain extremely high purine levels. Similarly, avoid coarse grains such as corn or buckwheat, as their bran layers contain excessive purines that can lead to elevated uric acid levels with prolonged consumption.
If elevated uric acid occurs, increase daily water intake to boost urine volume and accelerate uric acid excretion. Opt for soda water, light tea, or plain boiled water when hydrating. Consume more low-protein foods like skim milk powder or eggs, which provide high-quality protein while promoting metabolism.
