Weibo: Medicated pillows can harbor dirt and bacteria
Summer has seen a surge in concept pillows, with medicated pillows being one type. Businesses claim these pillows aid sleep, but many people are unaware that there are numerous varieties of medicated pillows, making it difficult to discern quality. The medicinal ingredients inside actually have expiration dates. Failure to replace and clean them properly can lead to the accumulation of dirt and bacteria, potentially triggering asthma or skin infections.Yesterday, a netizen reported on Weibo that health-promoting medicinal pillows should be chosen with caution, as they could potentially become toxic pillows.
Medicinal pillows sold online come in various forms. Many merchants claim their pillows are filled with pure natural Chinese herbs, offering benefits like treating cervical spondylosis and insomnia. Some even claim to improve cardiovascular diseases. Do these health pillows truly deliver their advertised effects? What precautions should users take? To address these questions, our reporter conducted an investigation.
Pharmacological Effects of Medicinal Pillows
First, the aroma is inhaled through breathing, potentially achieving "aromatherapy for ailments."
Second, continuous stimulation of the meridians and acupoints on the head—linked throughout the body—may unblock nasal meridians, promote smooth qi and blood flow, and thereby help reduce inflammation.
Third, ingredients penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the body, potentially regulating and restoring normal physiological functions in the nasal area.
Precautions for Using Medicinal Pillows:
Medicinal pillows made with Chinese herbs generally have no side effects during use. However, to maximize their health benefits, observe the following guidelines:
1. Regularly air out the pillow core and replace the herbs. Chinese herbs readily absorb bodily perspiration and may mold, especially in summer. Frequently place the pillow in a well-ventilated area to air it out. However, avoid direct exposure to sunlight, as this may cause the medicinal properties to evaporate too quickly. Ideally, replace the pillow filling monthly if possible.
2. Avoid using the herbal pillow for too short a duration. Unlike oral medications, herbal pillows work gradually. Effects typically become noticeable after 3-6 months of continuous use, at which point therapeutic benefits become stable and consolidated.Nightly use should last no less than 6 hours; shorter durations may compromise efficacy. 3. Avoid excessive padding between the herbal pillow and the head/neck. Do not layer additional materials over the pillow core, as this may hinder the herbs' therapeutic action. Place the pillow directly under the pillowcase or use only thin padding.
4. Tailor the pillow to the individual. Medicated pillows should be selected and prepared according to the principles of syndrome differentiation and treatment. For example, individuals with deficiency-cold syndromes or constitutional deficiency-cold should avoid prolonged use of pillows containing strongly cold-natured herbs. Fillings should prioritize mildly cool, light, and aromatic herbs—preferably plant flowers, leaves, or stems—while avoiding highly pungent, fiercely hot, intensely cold, or potent toxic substances.Exercise caution when selecting herbs that activate or break blood stasis. Special note: Herbal pillows are contraindicated for individuals with Yang hyperactivity and Yin deficiency, pregnant women, and children. Therapeutic pillows with potent, aggressive medicinal effects—such as those for treating rheumatism or rheumatoid arthritis—should not be indiscriminately used for general wellness. Those with access to such treatments are advised to consult a TCM wellness and rehabilitation practitioner for guidance.
