Researchers analyzed a range of data from around the world on the physiological and psychological effects of sugar consumption and found that a significant number of people with depression have high levels of systemic inflammation. Since consuming excess sugar increases low-grade inflammation, the hormones it produces lead directly to the brain entering a state of major depression.
The effect of too much sugar on the body's microorganisms is also a trigger for depression, as some microorganisms "thrive" in sugar-rich environments, generating certain chemicals that make people more prone to depression. In addition, people who eat too much sugar also produce more advanced glycosylation end-products, they have a greater oxidative stress response, and are more likely to have insulin resistance and dopamine dysregulation, which are all associated with inflammation.
The researchers suggest that people with depression should eat less sugar and more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are better for mental health.
