Cleft lip, commonly known as cleft lip and palate, is a prevalent and highly detrimental congenital disorder. It primarily affects infants. If not treated promptly during early childhood, correction becomes significantly more challenging later in life. What factors contribute to infants developing cleft lip?
Prevention:
1.To prevent cleft lip and palate, avoid first-time pregnancy at an advanced age;
2. Avoid chronic diarrhea during early pregnancy to prevent imbalances in calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, etc.; consume ample vegetables and fruits to prevent vitamin deficiencies;
3. Take folic acid supplements systematically before conception;
4. Avoid medications like aspirin and corticosteroids;
5. Maintain a positive mindset and avoid excessive stress;
6. Prevent viral infections and avoid exposure to radiation.
Optimal Timing for Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery:
Unilateral cleft lip: 3 months old; Bilateral cleft lip: 6 months old; Cleft palate: 1.5 to 2 years old.
Early Pregnancy Prevention is Crucial Environmental Factors:
Especially in urban areas, water and air pollution pose significant risks to pregnant women. Additionally, viral infections (e.g., influenza), X-rays, vehicle exhaust, and microwaves can cause genetic mutations.
Pharmaceutical factors:
Maternal chronic conditions during pregnancy such as anemia, diabetes, severe nutritional deficiencies, or use of certain medications like sedatives, antiepileptic drugs, and hormonal agents.
Tobacco and Alcohol Factors:
Data indicates that heavy smoking (including secondhand smoke) and alcohol abuse during early pregnancy significantly increase the incidence of cleft lip and palate in offspring compared to non-smoking, non-drinking mothers. Singer Faye Wong is a notable example. Naturally, exposure to secondhand smoke carries similar risks.
Emotional Factors:
As the saying goes, "disease stems from the mind." Maintaining emotional stability during pregnancy is crucial for preventing cleft lip and palate, as well as other conditions.
