Researchers analyzed global data on sugar intake's physiological and psychological effects, finding elevated systemic inflammation levels in many depression patients. Excessive sugar consumption increases low-grade inflammation, triggering hormones that directly induce severe depressive states in the brain.
Excessive sugar consumption also affects gut microbiota, contributing to depression by promoting the growth of certain microorganisms in high-sugar environments. These microorganisms produce chemicals that heighten susceptibility to depression.Additionally, individuals consuming excessive sugar produce more advanced glycation end products (AGEs), experience heightened oxidative stress, and are more likely to develop insulin resistance and dopamine dysregulation—all conditions linked to inflammation.
Researchers recommend that individuals with depression reduce sugar intake and increase consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids for improved mental health.
