After multiple failed weight loss attempts, many turn to liposuction for body contouring. Ultrasonic liposuction is a type of fat removal procedure known for its high safety profile. Below is an introduction to ultrasonic liposuction.
Since Italian surgeon Fisher and French surgeon Fournier pioneered cosmetic liposuction in 1982, the procedure has gained global popularity, with annual liposuction rates rising especially in the United States. In 2001, approximately 275,463 liposuction procedures were performed across the United States. In China, liposuction for body contouring and weight loss has also become highly popular, second only to double eyelid surgery. Fat deposits can be removed from any area of the body where excess subcutaneous fat accumulates. Common areas for women include the double chin, upper arms, abdomen, lower back, thighs, and calves. For men, common areas include gynecomastia (male breast tissue) and beer bellies. Ultrasonic liposuction machines, a newer development, first use ultrasound to dissolve fat before suctioning it out with finer cannulas. These thinner cannulas cause less vascular damage, reduce bleeding, allow removal of larger fat areas, minimize nerve damage, and result in less postoperative pain.
The finer cannula diameter also allows for sculpting smaller areas such as the chin, cheeks, popliteal fossa, and ankles. It can be used to destroy and remove sweat glands in the armpits to treat bromhidrosis, as well as to remove hyperplastic mammary tissue during gynecomastia treatment. A cooling system prevents the ultrasound probe from overheating, eliminating the risk of skin burns.
The primary advantage of ultrasonic liposuction is its enhanced safety profile. Traditional high-suction liposuction requires vigorous suctioning, increasing the risk of damaging surrounding tissues like nerves and blood vessels, leading to greater bleeding. Excessive fat removal may occasionally pose a risk of post-operative fat embolism, though this complication is relatively rare.
Ultrasonic liposuction targets only fat tissue, minimizing damage to blood vessels and nerves. The procedure requires less vigorous suctioning, resulting in reduced bleeding. This allows for larger-area and higher-volume fat removal, with more uniform results in treated areas.
Clinical experience shows that ultrasonic liposuction procedures take longer due to the finer cannula diameter. When large volumes of fat require removal, achieving optimal results becomes challenging considering anesthesia duration and surgeon stamina.
For individuals who have exhausted all conventional weight loss methods yet remain dissatisfied with their body shape, ultrasonic liposuction offers a rapid and safe solution to achieve their slimming goals.
