Can Real Men Get Breast Cancer? How Men Can Protect Themselves

Can men get breast cancer? Doctors confirm this is indeed possible. They caution that male breast tumors are often overlooked due to their small size and lack of pain, frequently leading to late-stage diagnosis. Men around age 60 entering andropause are advised to undergo regular breast tissue screenings.
In fact, the development of male breast cancer is closely linked to estrogen levels in the body. Certain congenital or acquired conditions that elevate estrogen levels may increase a man's risk of developing breast cancer:
1) A family history of breast cancer increases the risk for subsequent generations;
2) Use or consumption of skincare products, foods, or medications containing high levels of estrogen;
3) Liver diseases like cirrhosis can impair hormone metabolism, leading to significant estrogen accumulation and relatively reduced androgen levels;
4) Excessive obesity causing fat accumulation may also trigger male breast cancer. This occurs because fat cells can convert androgens into estrogens, elevating estrogen levels in men and thereby inducing breast cancer.
Seek medical attention promptly if you experience the following symptoms:
1. Painless lumps under the areola, typically unilateral (occurring on one side only), though bilateral cases are rare. Accessory breasts may also be affected.
2. In addition to small, poorly defined, painless lumps, approximately half of patients may experience skin redness, itching, nipple retraction, or nipple eczema.
3. As the condition progresses, the mass may adhere to the skin, become fixed, and develop "satellite" nodules.
How Men Can Prevent Breast Cancer
Maintain breast hygiene and develop the habit of regular self-examination.
Stay alert to any changes in the breasts. If you experience localized pain or tenderness, discover a painless lump with unclear borders, notice nipple retraction, or observe discharge, seek immediate medical consultation and examination.
Compared to women, men are more inclined to take nutritional supplements, many of which contain hormonal ingredients. Exercise caution when selecting such products.
