Morning is an ideal time for exercise. As the saying goes, the day's work begins at dawn. Appropriate physical activity for seniors can nurture both body and mind. If outdoor air quality is poor in the early morning, exercising at home is a viable option. Below, we recommend a "Ten-Step Massage Routine" to relax muscles, stimulate blood flow, and strengthen the body.
1. Palm Push Along the Conception Vessel. The Conception Vessel runs along the body's midline. Lie on your back and use your palms to push downward from the center of your chest, passing through the navel to the lower abdomen. Repeat 50 times.
2. Palm Massage of the Abdomen. Lie flat on your back with both hands overlapping on your abdomen. Using the navel as the center, make circular motions clockwise around the navel area. Repeat 50 times.Steps 1 and 2 harmonize the stomach, strengthen the spleen, eliminate food stagnation, promote smooth qi flow, and facilitate bowel movements, effectively preventing gastrointestinal disorders. Additionally, by stimulating key lower abdominal acupoints—Guanyuan (CV4), Qihai (CV6), and Zhongji (CV3)—they fortify the body, boost immunity, and enhance organ function.
3. Combing the Hair with Both Hands. Spread fingers naturally and slightly bend them. Move hands from front to back in a combing motion, applying gentle pressure—stop if discomfort arises—50 times each side. Ancient Chinese health practitioners advocated "frequent hair combing."This is because the head is the "summit of all yang energies." Numerous meridians and extraordinary vessels converge here, with dozens of acupoints—approximately one-quarter of the body's total—and over ten specific stimulation zones. Thus, combing the hair with both hands promotes meridian energy flow, improves blood circulation, alleviates headaches, reduces fatigue, enhances sleep, and nourishes hair while preventing hair loss.
4. Finger Massage of Fengchi Points. The Fengchi acupoints are located in the hollows at the back of the head, level with the hairline and earlobes. Use the thumbs of both hands to massage each Fengchi point 50 times, until a sensation of soreness and fullness is felt locally. Regularly massaging these points effectively prevents and treats headaches, dizziness, hypertension, stiff neck pain, red and painful eyes, stroke, colds, and stiff neck.
5. Bridge Arch Massage. The Bridge Arch point is located on the large tendons on both sides of the front of the neck, palpable when moving the head side to side. Slowly push downward with the thumb, performing 50 strokes on one side before switching. Avoid simultaneous bilateral pressure to prevent reflexive blood pressure drops or fainting. This point helps lower blood pressure.According to Western medical explanation, this area contains the carotid sinus; appropriate stimulation can lower blood pressure.
6. Press Laogong. When making a fist, the point where the middle finger rests in the palm is Laogong. Use the knuckle of one hand's bent middle finger to press the Laogong point on the other hand, pressing 50 times.
7. Fist-rubbing the Shenshu point. Located on the waist, two finger-widths lateral to the spine at the level of the navel. Make a fist and use the first knuckle of the index finger as the pressure point, or keep the hand open and use the pad of the thumb. Rub in circles on the point. Massage each side 50 times. The kidneys are among the body's most vital organs, serving as the foundation of innate vitality. Modern habits like prolonged sitting, frequent smoking, excessive sexual activity, and irregular lifestyles can damage kidney qi. Massaging the Shenshu point nourishes the liver and kidneys, replenishes essence and marrow, and alleviates symptoms such as nocturnal emissions and weakness in the lower back and knees.
8. Tap the Gallbladder Meridian. Located along the outer body line, use fists to tap the outer thighs 50 times each. Apply moderate pressure due to the thick muscle and fat layers to effectively stimulate acupoints. This practice accelerates bile secretion, enhances nutrient absorption, and regulates emotions while relieving tension.
9. Tap Zusanli.Zusanli is located 3 cun below the outer knee eye, in the depression on the outer side of the tibia. Tap each Zusanli point on both legs 50 times with your fists. Zusanli is a vital health-preserving point in the body, capable of preventing illness, promoting wellness, and strengthening the body. Tapping Zusanli can prevent aging and ward off a hundred diseases. For those in good health, regularly massaging the Zusanli point can enhance vitality and improve overall physical and mental well-being.Persistent tapping of Zusanli can prevent and treat digestive disorders such as stomach pain, acid reflux, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation, hence the saying, "For abdominal ailments, seek Zusanli."
10. Rub Yongquan with palms. Yongquan is located at the front third of the sole, in the depression formed when toes are flexed. Rub Yongquan with palms back and forth 50 times on each foot.Yongquan is the lowest acupoint on the body and the starting point of the Kidney Meridian, closely tied to human vitality. Regular massage here nourishes the kidneys, improves eyesight, supports all internal organs, and promotes longevity. Simple exercises middle-aged and elderly individuals can perform at home help strengthen the body, loosen joints, avoid outdoor air pollution, and prevent or treat illnesses.
