Preventing colds in babies isn't difficult. First, ensure they are dressed appropriately. Second, if a baby sweats after activity, wipe them dry before removing clothing. Third, incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into their diet. Fourth, maintain good household and personal hygiene. Timely Clothing Adjustments As spring temperatures rise rapidly, babies' clothing should be adjusted promptly. The saying "bundle up in spring, bundle up in autumn" should be applied with moderation. At this time, exposure to cold drafts can easily lead to catching a chill and developing a cold. Therefore, choose breathable, sweat-wicking, lightweight clothing for your baby. Also, always carry a thicker outer layer to add or remove as needed. Pay special attention to keeping your baby's knees, back, and abdomen warm. Washing your baby's face and nose with cool water in the morning can help improve their tolerance to cold.
Wipe away sweat
When babies sweat after exercise, some parents first remove their clothes before wiping sweat. The correct approach is to wipe sweat first, then undress. If the baby has been less active or feels cold, promptly put the removed outer layer back on.
Eat more fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin C and water content, which boosts the body's resistance and helps prevent colds.Beyond fruits and vegetables, mushroom-based foods also strengthen children's disease resistance.
Among vegetables, cauliflower boasts the highest vitamin C content. Its vitamin C levels are 3–5 times higher than those in Chinese cabbage or soybean sprouts. Even citrus fruits like oranges, renowned for their vitamin C, contain less than cauliflower.Cauliflower contains twice the vitamin C found in citrus fruits. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that "white foods benefit the lungs." This pristine vegetable not only prevents respiratory illnesses like colds but also serves as an excellent blood vessel cleanser. Beyond cauliflower, offering babies moderate amounts of lemon tea also helps prevent colds.Lemon tea helps regulate qi, clear phlegm, dispel fatigue, alleviate cold headaches, detoxify, and nourish the stomach. Preparing it is simple: slice two to three pieces of fresh lemon, add 1g of salt, and steep in hot water. Drink it while hot, as it turns bitter when cooled. It can be consumed before or after meals without upsetting the stomach.
Maintain Indoor and Personal Hygiene
Beyond ensuring your baby wears appropriately layered clothing, promptly wiping sweat, and encouraging fruit and vegetable intake, maintaining personal and environmental hygiene is crucial for eliminating bacteria and viruses to prevent colds.
Indoor Hygiene
Clear indoor trash daily and clean rooms regularly. Ensure adequate air circulation to disperse bacteria.Open windows for ventilation twice daily, morning and evening, for 15-30 minutes each time. If a flu patient is present in the home, they should avoid close contact with the baby, wear a mask, use separate utensils, and wash hands frequently. If a parent has the flu, fumigate the room with vinegar to disinfect the air. Applying garlic juice to the nostrils or consuming a few cloves of garlic can also reduce transmission risk for healthy individuals.
Baby Personal Hygiene
When taking your baby outdoors, avoid crowded, bustling places with poor air quality, including movie theaters, teahouses, hospitals, and roadside areas, to minimize the risk of cross-infection. After returning home, change shoes and wash both your hands and your baby's hands. Before family members or friends hold the baby, always ask them to wash their hands with soap and water first. If a family member has a cold, ensure the home is well-ventilated.If necessary, family members with colds should wear masks and minimize contact with the baby.
