Chapter 1: Fundamentals of Reflexology
Reflex zones corresponding to all organs of the body are distributed across the feet and hands.
Reflexology involves stimulating these reflex zones to enhance the body's self-healing capacity and restore health.
Before performing reflexology massage, it is essential to thoroughly master the following fundamental knowledge and techniques.
Preparations Before Reflexology Massage
Below are the preparatory steps required before beginning reflexology massage. These are all simple preparations. To enhance the effectiveness of the massage and ensure safety, please carry out these preparations diligently.
Preparation 1
Trim nails to an appropriate length
Overly long nails can scratch the skin during reflexology massage, causing pain to yourself or others, and may even injure the skin. The ideal nail length is flush with the fingertip. If nails extend beyond the fingertip, trim them using nail clippers or a nail file.
Preparation 2
Wear comfortable clothing
Reflexology should be performed in comfortable attire and a relaxed posture. Opt for loose-fitting garments like T-shirts and stretchy shorts that allow freedom of movement.
Preparation 3
Clean hands and feet
After bathing, ensure hands and feet are thoroughly cleaned and the body is well-relaxed—this is the optimal state for reflexology. If bathing isn't possible, soak your feet or clean them with a wet wipe.
Foot soaking method: Fill a large basin or bucket with 40°C–43°C (104°F–155°F) warm water. Soak feet for 10–15 minutes. Water level should reach below the calves. Add 3–4 drops of essential oil or use body wash.
Prepare 4
Prepare cream, talcum powder, and moisturizing oil
Using cream, talcum powder, or moisturizing oil enhances flexibility and ease during massage. Talcum powder is suitable for sweaty feet, while moisturizing oil benefits dry feet—choose based on foot type or preference. Homemade massage oil also works well (see p.116).When using talcum powder, take care not to inhale it into your mouth or nose.
Preparation 5
Remove all jewelry
Rings, bracelets, watches, and other jewelry can scratch the skin, so remove them beforehand. Place these items in a designated spot to prevent loss.
Preparation 6
Create a Relaxing Atmosphere
For example, lighting your favorite essential oil in the room, playing music that brings you joy, turning off the lights and lighting candles, etc., can all help alleviate physical fatigue. Setting your phone to silent mode will enhance the effect.
