For women, the arrival of their monthly period often brings various discomforts. During this special time, you can't do everything you normally would and need extra care. So what should women pay attention to during menstruation? China Health Network shares things to avoid during your period—remember these to prevent regrets later...
1. Avoid pounding your lower back
2. Avoid tight-fitting clothing
Tight pants with a small hip circumference can compress local capillaries, impairing blood circulation and causing genital congestion and swelling.
3. Avoid tooth extraction
While few dentists may ask if you're menstruating before extraction, you must remember: never have a tooth pulled during your period! Doing so increases bleeding during the procedure and leaves a lingering metallic taste in your mouth afterward, which can suppress appetite and lead to nutritional deficiencies during menstruation. This occurs because during menstruation, the uterine lining releases increased tissue activators. These activate fibrinogen in the blood into fibrinolytic enzymes with anticoagulant effects. Simultaneously, platelet counts decrease, reducing the body's clotting ability and prolonging bleeding time.
4. Avoid using body wash to clean the genital area
The genital area may develop odor during menstruation, especially in summer. However, using body wash to clean this area while showering or repeatedly rinsing with hot water is unhealthy. It may actually increase the risk of vaginal infections and cause itching.Normally, the vaginal environment maintains a slightly acidic pH that inhibits bacterial growth. However, during menstruation, the vagina becomes more alkaline, reducing its resistance to bacteria and increasing susceptibility to infection. Using non-specialized vaginal cleansers or excessive hot water rinsing can further increase alkalinity. Therefore, specialized feminine wash should be used for cleansing, especially during menstruation.
5. Avoid Alcohol Consumption
Hormonal changes during menstruation reduce the body's alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, making women more susceptible to intoxication. More critically, the liver must work harder to produce enzymes that break down alcohol, significantly increasing its workload. Alcohol consumption during this period can cause more severe liver damage than usual, raising the risk of liver dysfunction.
6. Avoid Fried Foods
Fried foods are another major taboo for menstruating women. Under the influence of progesterone, sebum production increases, making skin oily and sensitive due to dilated capillaries. Consuming fried foods at this time burdens the skin, potentially causing pimples, acne, folliculitis, and dark circles under the eyes.Furthermore, as fat and water metabolism slows during menstruation, consuming fried foods can cause fat to accumulate in the body.
7. Avoid sexual intercourse
During menstruation, the shedding of the uterine lining creates an open wound. Engaging in sexual intercourse can introduce bacteria, allowing it to ascend into the uterine cavity and cause infection.
8.Avoid excessively salty foods
High-salt foods increase salt and water retention in the body. Before menstruation, this can easily lead to headaches, emotional agitation, and irritability.
9. Avoid strong tea and coffee
These beverages contain high levels of caffeine, which can stimulate the nervous and cardiovascular systems, potentially causing menstrual pain, prolonged periods, and excessive bleeding.
10. Avoid raw, cold vegetables, fruits, and icy beverages
Excessively cold foods slow blood circulation, impairing uterine contractions and blood flow. This hinders menstrual discharge and may cause cramps.
11. Avoid karaoke singing
During menstruation, the capillaries in the vocal cords become engorged, making the walls more fragile. Prolonged or loud singing at this time may cause vocal cord capillaries to rupture due to tension and rapid vibration, leading to hoarseness or even permanent vocal damage such as a lower or rougher voice.Medical professionals specifically advise women to avoid prolonged or loud singing starting two days before menstruation begins.
12. Inappropriate for Medical Examinations
During menstruation, it is not only inadvisable to undergo gynecological examinations or urine tests, but also blood tests and electrocardiograms (ECGs). Hormonal fluctuations at this time can distort test results, making it difficult to obtain accurate data.
