Teeth have become people's second calling card. While more and more people pursue bright eyes and pearly whites, many often take the wrong path in teeth whitening. Several senior experts have summarized these common misconceptions for us.
Does teeth cleaning equal whitening?
Many mistakenly believe teeth cleaning is the same as whitening, but in fact, they are two entirely different procedures.Dr. Liu explains that scaling primarily cleans teeth by removing surface stains from coffee, tea, and tobacco, along with accumulated tartar, making teeth appear whiter. However, many assume professional dental scaling automatically whitens teeth. In reality, for the primary target demographic born in the 1970s and 1980s, scaling cannot address internal tooth discoloration like tetracycline staining or fluorosis. For actual teeth whitening, one should seek professional cosmetic dental services.
Can anyone whiten their teeth if they want to?
Teeth whitening isn't suitable for everyone. Sometimes, failed bleaching can lead to uneven tooth coloration. Additionally, teeth with enamel hypoplasia, microcracks, or moderate wear may experience greater discomfort during treatment compared to healthy teeth. Therefore, teeth whitening must be performed at a reputable hospital under the guidance of a professional dentist.
Is whitening a permanent solution?
No teeth whitening is permanent. Generally, the effects of cold light whitening last about two years. However, this doesn't mean teeth suddenly revert to their original state after two years. Over time, consuming pigmented foods and beverages like coffee, soy sauce, and tea gradually stains teeth again.
Is whiter always better?
Healthy teeth aren't truly snow-white. Avoid bleaching them excessively white, as this looks unnatural. Experts advise that teeth should match the whiteness of your sclera (the white part of your eyes). Overly brightened teeth can disrupt facial harmony.
