Ophiopogon japonicus (McDong) possesses multiple benefits: nourishing yin, generating fluids, moistening the lungs, and clearing the heart. It is primarily used for dry cough due to lung dryness, consumptive cough, fluid deficiency with thirst, restlessness and insomnia, internal heat with excessive thirst, intestinal dryness with constipation, and pharyngitis with white throat coating. It nourishes yin, generates fluids, moistens the lungs, and stops coughing: Used for lung and stomach yin deficiency with scanty fluids, thirst, dry cough, and hemoptysis; heart yin deficiency with palpitations, startle easily; and late-stage febrile diseases with fluid depletion. Combined with glehnia root and fritillary bulb, it treats lung yin deficiency dry cough. While its benefits are numerous, note some potential side effects of ophiopogon.
Side Effects and Contraindications of Ophiopogon
1. Ophiopogon demonstrates good clinical safety, with animal subacute toxicity studies confirming minimal toxicity.
2. Allergic reactions have been reported, manifesting as nausea, vomiting, palpitations, restlessness, generalized erythema, and pruritus.
3.Ophiopogon has a cold nature and moisturizing properties, excelling at nourishing yin and alleviating dryness. It is suitable for conditions characterized by yin deficiency with internal heat and dry cough due to fluid depletion. It is contraindicated for conditions involving water-dampness, cold-dampness, phlegm-turbidity, or pronounced qi deficiency caused by spleen deficiency and impaired transport and transformation. When using Ophiopogon clinically as a tonic for deficiency syndromes, careful pattern differentiation is essential. Improper use may generate dampness and phlegm, leading to adverse reactions such as excessive phlegm, bland taste in the mouth, and poor appetite.
4. Ophiopogon decoction exhibits sedative effects. It potentiates the sedation of chlorpromazine, enhances the hypnotic action of sodium pentobarbital, antagonizes the stimulatory effects of caffeine, and delays convulsions, tonic seizures, and death induced by reserpine. However, it does not prevent animal mortality.
5. It affects myocardial contraction amplitude. Isolated guinea pig heart perfusion studies indicate that low doses of both Ophiopogon total saponins and total amino acids enhance myocardial contractility and increase coronary blood flow, while high doses inhibit myocardial function and reduce coronary flow. Neither dose affects heart rate.
6. Ophiopogon increases spleen weight. ICR mice received intraperitoneal injections of Ophiopogon polysaccharides or ginseng saponins, with saline as control, for 7 consecutive days. Animals were then euthanized by blood collection, and body weight along with thymus and spleen weights were measured to calculate thymus and spleen indices. Results showed Ophiopogon polysaccharides significantly increased spleen weight.
7. Excessive consumption of Ophiopogon tea may cause spleen and stomach deficiency-cold. While Ophiopogon extends fruit fly lifespan, suggesting potential anti-aging effects, this does not imply that consuming more Ophiopogon products is always beneficial. In fact, all products possess dual properties.Swimming tests indicate that the saponins, polysaccharides, and amino acids in Ophiopogon have significant anti-fatigue effects. However, Ophiopogon has a cold nature. It should not be used for individuals with spleen-stomach deficiency-cold presenting symptoms such as diarrhea with loose stools, a white greasy tongue coating, or indigestion. Children, whose digestive systems are still developing, are particularly unsuitable for consumption. Personally, I recommend boiling white radish water for pediatric constipation, which yields relatively good results.
