Hyaluronic acid, Botox, collagen... These darlings of the injectable beauty world have surged in popularity, fueled by celebrity endorsements. Yet their steep prices leave many beauty enthusiasts drooling but hesitant. Seizing this opportunity, numerous online retailers now offer injectables like Botox at relatively low prices, complete with syringes for self-administration.Experts caution that DIY injectable treatments are not for the faint of heart—improper use can be deadly. Injectable Cosmetics Surge on Online Marketplaces At licensed medical spas, a single injection of Botox or hyaluronic acid can cost tens of thousands of yuan. Purchasing these products online, however, requires only a few hundred yuan—a price tag that proves undeniably tempting.
An investigation by reporters found that searching "botulinum toxin" or "hyaluronic acid" on Taobao yields hundreds of results. One store offered a product titled "Hyaluronic Acid Height Enhancer, Nose Augmentation Oil, Also Provides Slimming Facial and Body Injections Nationwide," while another advertised "Hyaluronic Acid Whitening Injections."Store owners stated that customers could receive complimentary syringes with purchases or buy them separately for self-injection. Regarding this practice of self-administering injected cosmetics, Zhao Qinghui, founder of the medical aesthetics forum Dongmeng.com, bluntly declared, "This is sheer madness."She noted that self-injection of cosmetic products is not uncommon, with frequent posts on her forum showing cases of facial paralysis caused by DIY injections.
In fact, the authenticity of online-sold injectable cosmetics is questionable. According to plastic surgery expert Dr. Song Chunqiong, the current prices of injectable cosmetics are far from low.Taking hyaluronic acid as an example, only two brands are currently approved by the China Food and Drug Administration: the imported Restylane and the domestically produced Yimei. Their price reaches as high as 6,000 yuan per milliliter, and to address issues like facial wrinkles, many require at least 4-5 milliliters. Media reporters found that online prices for hyaluronic acid range from several hundred to over a thousand yuan. Experts indicate that it is difficult to purchase genuine hyaluronic acid at such low prices.
Improper Injection Can Be Life-Threatening
Even with legitimate products, self-administering cosmetic injections is playing with one's life. Experts stress that while cosmetic injections may seem like simple "needle work" or "minimally invasive treatment," they demand medical environments and injecting physicians no less stringent than surgical procedures. Only qualified doctors should perform them.
